Canadians Who Haven’t Received The Governor General’s Performing Arts Award
Today, the Governor General of Canada Arts Award Foundation announced the recipients of their lifetime achievement honors. Suffice to say, I had never heard of the majority of the honorees. They are:
- Michael Buble (singer)
- Robert Lantos (film producer)
- Ben Heppner (opera singer)
- Marie Chouinard (dancer/choreographer)
- Susan Aglukark (singer)
- Suzanne Lebeau (playwright)
- John McKellar (philanthropist)
The top 2 on this list are the only ones that I had any familiarity with. The others seem to be more well known in Canada or people who are familiar with their craft. Since 1992, scores of Canadian born or Canadian based entertainers have been honored with this award from Neil Young to William Shatner. But I have noticed a good number of Canadian legends who are household names around the world have yet to be honored. These are the people/groups from up north who would deserve this honor wholeheartedly (in no particular order):
Len Cariou (Broadway singer/actor)
Genevieve Bujold (actress) (UPDATE: HONORED IN 2018 CLASS)
The Kids In The Hall (comedy troupe)
Paul Anka (singer/songwriter)
Catherine O’Hara (actress/comedian)
Andrea Martin (actress/comedian)
David Foster (musician/record producer)
Bob Ezrin (record producer)
The Irish Rovers (band)
Sidney J. Furie (film director)
Kenneth Welsh (actor)
Paul Shaffer (musician)
Martin Short (actor/comedian) (UPDATE: HONORED IN 2017 CLASS)
Ronnie Hawkins (singer)
Beau Dommage (band)
Kate Nelligan (actress)
Frank Mills (musician)
Dan Aykroyd (actor/comedian)
Rick Moranis (actor/comedian)
Dave Thomas (actor/comedian)
Howie Mandel (actor/comedian)
