Wednesday, August 5: Last Chapter, “Thorn of Creation”
Scott “Wino” Weinrich has been the name and face of American doom for nearly 40 years, but Robert Lowe is just as likely to show up as a common denominator: between his lengthy stints in Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass, the vocalist has turned up on countless other doom projects. Lowe was billed as a guest vocalist on Last Chapter’s The Living Waters, but tunes like “Thorn of Creation” were very much driven by his distinctive voice. To be fair, Last Chapter added a couple wrinkles to the doom metal template, most notably traces of psychedelia and a little prog, but this was doom through and through, thanks in no small part to the man at the mic. Unfortunately for the band, doom had essentially coalesced behind a small handful of acts, and with Lowe moving on the band was only around for one more record before disbanding.
