Of Bloody Faces and Wounded Pride (Young Katie & Bobby)
Bobby looked at his little sister with a newfound curiousity, head canting to the left as he watched her tiny body quiver. The tiny blonde girl had her face buried in her hands, and when her older brother reached to gingerly move them so he could see what was wrong, she let out an indignant howl and found herself in a brand new set of sobs. Katie threw herself onto the ground in her grief, cries muffled by the grass and the dirt and partially Bobby's sneakers. "What's wrong?" Bobby asked again, voice soft. He wasn't sure she had heard him, but sure enough, Katie looked up at him, face flushed as tears, snot, and blood all intermingled in an unpleasant solution. She sniffled loudly and rolled on her back so he could see her, but she said nothing. Bobby looked down and appraised the large welt on his sister's cheek, which barely touched the eye that was quickly blackening. "Wha'd you do?" Katie let out an indignant huff and gave her brother a withering look that had yet to be perfected. He shrunk back a little and sank down beside her, now looking at the other kids playing in the distance. A breeze passed by, and he felt cold. "I punched Matt," the little girl finally said in a small, simple tone. Bobby looked down at her with large eyes and a gaping mouth. "You mean Maddy, right? You can't be talking 'bout Matt! He's like... he's like..." "Twelve," Katie answered with a matter-of-fact tone and a large, proud smile. It faltered though, and she touched her face with a trembling finger. When she brought it back and saw that it was reddened by her own blood, her face crumpled and tears threatened to spill again. "But Katie, you're only eight--" "Eight and a half!" she shrieked, sitting up in her sudden outrage and dismissing her bleeding face for her pride. She began to pick the grass out of her short, blonde hair. "Shoulda gotten me or Dallas," Bobby muttered, bottom lip jutting out and half-lidded eyes glaring anywhere but his wounded sister. "We woulda helped you, you know that." "Didn't need help," the little girl grunted as she stood up, brushing off her sundress that their mother had picked out for her. It was littered with grass stains and dirt and a bit of blood, but Katie's clothes always had been marred by blood. "And he used a rock! That dirty rotten no good cheater, I outta go get Daddy's knife and--" "Katie!" Bobby hissed, looking around nervously as if their parents had been there, listening to their conversation the entire time. "Don't say things like that; it ain't right!" Katie used her entire forearm to wipe away the tears, snot, and blood and fixed Bobby with a stare that, again, had yet to be perfected, but showed some promise. "What he said wasn't all that right either, Bobby, so you just shut up and let me say what I want; Daddy isn't even here--" "Wha'd he say?" Bobby cut in, too curious to see what little comment would've sparked his eight (and a half) year old sister into a fiery rage. "He said," Katie began in an ominous tone, "that we all smelled bad and then he said somethin' 'bout Dallas that I don't think I can really say because it had a lotta bad words in it and he just kept talking, Bobby, and we're s'posed to protect family, right? Well, I was protecting you and Dallas; oh yeah, and he said some bad stuff 'bout you, too." She nodded a little, and Bobby looked over to the distance where Matt resided, acting all cool with his fellow twelve year olds. And then he turned to his little sister and said something that made her turn red, giggle, and grin maliciously at the same time: "Go get Dallas; we're gonna kick his ass."

You too, actually, now that I come to think of it. Oh, by the way, I'm a skinwalker.
