He believes he has the right to perform good deeds with the money to counterbalance his act, as well as simultaneously ridding the world of vermin. Set in New York City, Rossen's version modernizes the tale: Raskolnikov becomes Denny, a jazz trumpeter in a sleazy pool hall, his victims the owners of a pawnshop, while he is pursued by a pair of cops. Basis for the seminal 1952 film noir, directed by Friz Lang and starring Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Ryan and a young Marilyn Monroe. A tremendous association. Like Odets, Rossen's career began as a playwright in New York, and like Odets, Rossen had a tremendous passion for literature, the theatre, and radical politics.
