Mystery/Thriller Monday

This is not a new mystery/thriller by Robin Burcell (probably now better known for writing the new Clive Cussler books). One of the indications of that is that the main character Kate Gillespie is the ‘first female homicide detective in the SFPD’. Still, it is a heck of a mystery, and quite the thriller too.

Kate and her partner Sam are investigating a dead body in a freezer when Sam’s wife is killed (she’s the coroner on the case), and then, Sam disappears. That, not surprisingly, makes quite a few people think he’s the murderer. But, Kate isn’t having it, and so she stays on the case. Although she has the IA officer Mike Torrance watching her as she tries to prove Sam’s innocence.

The mystery is awesome. And, the thriller is super suspenseful as Kate’s ex gets involved, as well as a local crime boss that Kate was supposed to testify against. Well, I was turning pages as fast as I could for sure.

"The Black List (Sydney Fitzpatrick #4)" by Robin Burcell:

The story follows Sydney Fitzpatrick in another case. This time, her ex-partner, Tony Carillo, asks for Sydney's help in a case linking to his soon to be ex-wife Sheila's boyfriend, Trip. The investigation into Trip leads Sydney to learn about charity's efforts of helping refugees from East Africa to live in the United States. An organization, A.D.E., aids such charities, but the problem is that there is talk of embezzlement in the company, and the death of one of the workers.

Sydney seeks the help of agents Zachary Griffin and James "Tex" Dalton, and the rest of the people from ATLAS that work on black ops. The agents of ATLAS are working on locating a terrorist, one whom they believe might be making his way to the U.S., if he is not already on local soil.

But soon, Sydney, Griffin, and Tex are found working on the same case, for somehow the A.D.E. is involved with terrorists, and more specifically, with the terrorist that they are looking for.

This time around, Sydney not only helps her friend, but also makes new friends and enemies, and must help to stop a threat that can be disastrous to the whole nation

Although this book is part of a series, the reader does not need to read the previous book(s) in order to understand and enjoy this book. There is enough background information about the characters and about parts of the story that are from previous books for the reader to grasp this book's storyline.

The book consists of sixty-seven (67) chapters. The reader is introduced to a total of about 70 characters throughout the book (the characters are introduced since the first chapter up to the very last chapters of the book). Out of these characters, about 25 of them are the main characters of the story. Most of the characters are the same protagonists from the previous book(s) from the series, such as Sydney Fitzpatrick, Zachary Griffin, James "Tex" Dalton, Tony Carillo, and a few others. There are some new characters that will be mysterious, for the reader will not know if whether their intentions are for good or for bad.

The story is filled with suspense, action scenes, mystery, and a budding romance story between Sydney and Griffin.

"The Bone Chamber (Sydney Fitzpatrick #2)" by Robin Burcell:

The story is about Sydney Fitzpatrick, an FBI sketch artist, who is called to sketch the face of a skull that is believed to be that of a missing woman. The case is not known to the public, and Sydney herself must be secretive about the case and only be involved in her drawing.

But then her friend, Natasha, a forensic anthropologist, is killed in a hit-and-run incident. Sydney had recommend Natasha for the case of the missing woman, and she vows to find her friends killer. But to do that, she must investigate more about this missing woman.

Sydney's search leads her to Rome where she must not only find who have been responsible for the murders, but also locate a treasure believed to have been hidden by the Freemasons. But the treasure is not gold, or precious jewels, and if it is found by the wrong people, it can bring dire consequences to many.

There are a total of about 35 characters in the story. About 15 of these characters have major active roles in the story.

The story has elements of mystery, with secret government agencies, secret societies, conspiracy theorists, crypts, ancient codes, etc. The story is filled with suspense, thrills, action, and many twists and turns. The book can be easily made into a movie, because there are plenty of action scenes, such as car chases, ambushes, etc.

The story has a feeling of authenticity, with realistic dialogue and scenarios. The author, Robin Burcell, shares the same career as the protagonist; she has worked as an FBI trained forensic artist.

Bookworm Digest: "The Bone Chamber (Sydney Fitzpatrick #2)"

This is such a great detective book. The best part about the book is that the author, Robin Burcell, knows what she is talking about; she herself has worked as an FBI trained forensic artist. That's why I like this book so much, because the author clearly has experience in what she is writing about.

The protagonist in this book is strong but realistic because she also has flaws. And all of the characters, not only that of Sydney, are like that. I like that all the characters had some vulnerability to them. Because although the characters do work for the government and are involved in dangerous situations, they seemed realistic.

There were some twists and turns that had me in the dark. There have been books in which I can figure out what is going to happen before it actually happens. For this book, that did not happen though, and I was glad about it. I was especially enthralled by who could be the mole, and I never figured out who it was until the story exposes the mystery.

I tend to like humorous characters (either in books, movies, or T.V. shows), and I liked the character of "Tex". (Of course the description of "Tex" helps too in liking the character). I also liked that there was occasional humor, such as playful banter between many of the characters. It lightened the mood of the story for a bit.

When Francesca and Sydney were talking in the train, I could see how Sydney did not understand how Francesca did not worry too much about the danger of her being killed. I can understand Francesca's logic because she was an intellectual who although she would die, her research and what she found would continue in history. So she could become famous and end up living her dream of finding something of historical importance, but of course she might not be alive to see any of that occur. I understand the logic but I don't agree with that logic. But I like that Sydney was not able to understand that because she had another way of thinking since her training/life is different than that of the professor.

The ending of the book was not disappointing, but I feel like there wasn't a definite ending to some of the characters (such as Adami) and the case itself. I wonder if there will be more from this book in other books, like the possible reappearance of Adami and the map.

Book I'm Currently Consuming: "The Bone Chamber"

I realized that I've started to neglect my "Current Chew" posts. The last one I wrote was for "The Lastling", and I have read four other books after reading that one. So it's about time that I write another post on what I'm currently reading...

I've been reading "The Bone Chamber" and I am very enthralled by this book. I was shopping at a bargain store and was so excited to see that they now are selling books. But most of the paperbacks were Romance books. I'll read some Romance books, but not the ones that have really cheesy looking covers, and all the Romance books there had those covers. The title of this book caught my attention, and after reading the description, I decided to buy it.

The story is about an FBI agent, Sydney, who is asked to do a sketch of a skull believed to belong to a missing woman. The case is not known to the public, and even Sydney is only told certain information on the case. She must be secretive about the case, and she is only given involvement in the case as a sketch artist. But then her friend, Natasha, is killed, and Sydney decides to investigate more into the case and find her friend's killer.

The story also deals with hidden secrets in the Vatican, and about how this can affect many people.

The story is exciting with typical scenarios for a Detective Fiction book; murder, danger, car chases, etc. There is a lot of adrenaline filled action scenes in the book. I could definitively see this book as a movie. The story has twists and turns and a lot of mystery. I really like this book so far.

I checked to see what other books were written by the author (Robin Burcell), and I saw that this book is a part of a series. The series is the "Sydney Fitzpatrick" series. "The Bone Chamber" is book 2. I went back to the store thinking that I had seen the first book in this series, but i was wrong. But I went to Walmart, and while I was looking through the books, I found the fourth (and latest) book in this series, "The Black List". :)

It seems like each book in the series have their own ending. It seems like the series consists of different books relating to the same protagonist(s), but each book contains a different story. So, the books deal with a different case(s) that Sydney is dealing with. I like that I found a series like this to read because 1. I've never read this kind of series before and 2. I don't want to start another series in which I must read all the books to finish the story, because I still haven't finished reading any of the other series I have started (ex. "The Passage").
