I hope to god that Robotech Academy's kickstarter failing means it's never being made and HG will finally rot in hell
Harmony Gold cancels "Robotech Academy" Kickstarter project
#HarmonyGold cancels #RobotechAcademy #Kickstarter project - #anime #CarlMacek #GregFinley #Robotech
Fans of the fantastic sci-fi/mecha anime franchise may be disappointed by the announcement released by Harmony Gold yesterday. The company announced via its Kickstarter page the cancellation of the Robotech Academy project, less than a week before the end of the funding period.
What could have been a new chapter brought to the small screen, written by Carl Macek himself before his passing, may…

Just in time to be wildly out of date in a little over 24 hours (the SDCC ROBOTECH panel is tomorrow evening), a NEW EPISODE of THIS ROBOTECH THING, in which I discuss the Robotech Academy project & Kickstarter at length, as well as show off some toys I was disappointed by and throw a sad, sorry little bone to Robotech/Voltron. (If you've been following my reactions to the book thus far, you probably know what I'm going to say.)
Enjoy, and be sure to please, please, please let me know your thoughts! Thanks!
Robotech Academy designs/recap, week two.
As of this writing, the Kickstarter is at almost $165,000 with 18 days to go. Unless this thing rallies hard at the end, I don't think they're gonna make their half mil. Still, we've got more pictures, so let's talk about 'em.
1. Back view of the cluttered mess of a mechanical design from last week. It looks just as bad from the back. To be an effective design they really need to smooth this thing out, give it a silhouette you can recognize from afar, give it some shape. As it is, it's just a bunch of stuff thrown together. It's so sad that the weakest thing about this company managing a mecha cartoon franchise is their mecha designs.
2. The ringed gas giant Fantoma, and its third moon Tirol -- the homeworld of the Robotech Masters. There is a strong implication that while the SDF-3 certainly took off for Tirol as we saw in the Sentinels animation, they didn't reach there immediately as was planned per Robotech Art 3 and the novel/comic book adaptations. The mining angle and talk of Fantoma's immense gravity are brought up, which were major plot points of Sentinels -- not that I expect them to actually be touched upon in Robotech Academy given that it can't use the Zentraedi at all. I remember the idea that Tirol's location is this great secret was a long-standing fan theory. I'm racking my brain trying to remember why this was a good idea; I think it has to do with the Masters controlling the Zentraedi, the powerful giants being unable to lay siege to their Masters to control their own destinies if they can't track down their homeworld. Hell, considering how much misery the Masters put their Empire through, I'm sure many civilizations would have loved to lay waste to Tirol. I expect that the Invid only managed to hunt the place down due to their special relationship with the Flower of Life; while they find no trace of it there, the place is still laden with Protoculture-powered technology, which the Invid are highly sensitive to. After stamping out the rest of the Masters' empire, I'm sure Tirol's Protoculture signature screamed at them across the sea of stars.
Setting speculation aside, the facts delivered are pretty thorough based on what long-time fans know from media published from the late 1980s through the 1990s. As one of those fans, I appreciate that. Considering how much of that stuff seemed to have been thrown out the window in the early 2000s, it is way cool to see it in materials for a new TV series a decade and a half later.
3. Rolf Emerson revisited. Elmer Damaso's character study does some squashing and stretching of elements of Emerson's uniform, but in the broad strokes it's the same design from '84. The gloves and the points on the shoulders are missing, and now he has his "faction insignia" on his right shoulder. As I point out here, this isn't the first time someone's decided to add that to one of the original animation designs; John Waltrip did this consistently to Max Sterling's flightsuit on his covers to Robotech II: The Sentinels - The Malcontent Uprisings back in 1989/1990. I'm not judging either way; I'm just letting you know there's precedent.
The major takeaway from this is that it's clear Harmony Gold does, in fact, have carte blanche to use Southern Cross character and mechanical designs in their new animation projects. I wonder if we'll also see a Supreme Commander Leonard cameo appearance.
4. New character! Female Robotech Academy ace Linsday is the first new character who's been revealed. I'm curious as to why her last name isn't revealed; the last time they deliberately left a last name out, as I recall, we were introduced to Maia Sterling, so I wonder if she's related to anyone we already know, especially when Tommy Yune and company are calling these characters the children of the first generation. Could be something, could be nothing. Again, we'll see.
I also offer up a comparison between her uniform and those of first and last generation heroes Rick Hunter and Marcus Rush. It seems to borrow design cues from both, and I'm sure those cues will pop a bit more when we see Lindsay and her classmates in color. (I also hadn't noticed, or had forgotten, some of the cues that the Shadow Chronicles uniforms borrowed from the Macross flightsuit before I did this.) For some reason this image of Rick is missing a detail on his glove that matches the detail on Lindsay's gloves -- which is annoying since that was one of the first cues that jumped out at me. I'm thinking they're setting this up as a "missing link" between the two designs. What's missing are elements relating to the Sentinels Expeditionary Force designs and the Southern Cross designs, which is a little funny since the implication is that Rolf Emerson, in his barely retouched Southern Cross uniform, is going to be standing right over there.
Also worth noting: last week it was announced that Tony Oliver will be returning as Admiral Rick Hunter. Here's hoping that near the Kickstarter's end they reveal his character design and it's an only slightly tweaked Sentinels Rick with his long black cape/jacket thing. (I've always liked his long black cape/jacket thing.)

For those wondering, the much-delayed episode where I discuss Robotech Academy and the Kickstarter has been reshot and should be up on the blog tomorrow. Be watching for it!
EXCLUSIVE! The new Veritech for Robotech Academy!
Okay! So I got this one out a little sooner. In fact the art for the strip was mostly done the day after I posted the last one. But backgrounds are my nemesis so doing the last panel took a few hours. I know that sounds ridiculous and is embarrassing to me as an “artist” but its the truth. But its done now…so now onto the next one. But first: THIS!!!
So, for anyone who was ever a fan of Robotech (or Macross which is the original Japanese show), even if you are no longer, go to this Kickstarter and back it for your kids. Or your Kid’s kids. I know that it may not hold a place in your heart anymore, but it may have once, and if you can try and connect with that kid in you, and remember what it was like to see something like this on TV, believe me your kids would feel the same. Or, again, your kid’s kids. Just imagine waking up on a Saturday morning and seeing your kid plopped down in front of the TV once again with something really worthwhile to watch. Something special, something with heart. So please, these guys are running out of time to fund this, and it takes a lot of people to make an animated show. So yes, its a lot of money, but if they’re going to make it happen, they need your help, and the help of anyone else that you can pull into this.
Here’s the link, I encourage you to help.

***UPDATE - Kickstarter has ended for Robotech and it was NOT successful.***
