I think about Victor’s reaction to finding out Yuuri named his dog after him a lot.
Honestly, this was not a conversation Yuuri was interested in having right now. Or ever.
“But Yuuri, I’m still confused. You think of me as a dog?”
Yuuri gave a defeated sigh. It had only been inevitable; several days after Victor had made his alarming and quite frankly overly-dramatic arrival in Hasetsu, he had discovered that Yuuri had named his old dog, Vicchan, after him.
“No, I… I named my dog after you,” Yuuri admitted, finding it very difficult to look Victor in the eyes.
“I was named after your dog?” Victor inquired innocently.
“Victor, no, I named Victor after you.”
“But which Victor?”
“You know which Victor!”
“But Yuuri, I’m Victor.”
“No, I mean yeah, I mean! I named- I named my dog, Vicchan, after you!” Yuuri sputtered.
“So you thought I was dog?”
Yuuri let out a frustrated huff. Ok, now Victor was just trying to tease him. If only his mom had’t brought out the baby photos of all things this wouldn’t have happened. Victor wouldn’t have heard his father talk about “how closer our Yuuri and Victor were.” Which of course elicited Victor treating the whole thing like it was a big deal.
It didn’t have to be a big deal.
“Victor…”
“Yes?”
“Please don’t.”
“But Yuuri, it’s adorable.”
So Victor was faking his confusion! But now Yuuri felt the need to clarify.
“It’s… I just… I just looked up to you a lot as a kid, you know? I still- I still do.”
Victor’s eyes lit up.
“Oh, Yuuri, what an honor! To name your sweet puppy after me!”
“He- he really was such a good dog,” Yuuri said softly.
Victor’s smile fell a fraction, which Yuuri hated. Why did he have to make things depressing? Why did he always have to-
Yuuri’s thoughts were cut short by Victor gripping him tightly in a sudden hug.
“I’m sure Vicchan was the best dog. He had a fabulous name, too.”
Yuuri tried really, really hard not to cry.
Luckily, Victor seemed to be somehow keenly in-tune with Yuuri’s emotions and exclaimed, “Speaking of best dogs! Makkachin!!”
Makkachin bounded into the living room, and promptly jumped up on Victor, his paws resting on his shoulders.
Victor spoke several words in Russian, all of which Yuuri assumed meant something along the lines of, “Good dog, you’re such a good dog, I love you, my beautiful, wonderful, fluff-muffin of a baby.”
Then, Yuuri heard Victor say, “Makkachin, go give Yuuri some love, he really needs it.”
Makkachin dutifully bounded over to Yuuri, successfully knocking him over (one of these days Yuuri would get used to how much Makkachin weighed).
Yuuri buried his face in Makkachin’s fur, squeezing him tight.
He really did need it.
