ROEN Lasercut Skull Camo Boots
Dance with Devils 10 Year Anniversary
My current itabag 💖
I watch one bad anime and now it’s taking over my mind. I am now writing an au that makes it better for me. Dance with Devils au where Roen grows alongside Ritsuka as a guard dog, Lindo is normal and not in love with his adopted sister, Azuna is older and trains Ritsuka to keep her safe, and the Devils are more grounded and Love Ritsuka for who she is. A little taste:
“Maksis…” The words fell gruffly from Cerberus’s figure head, Roen. He knew that power-hungry leaders were never made to last, but he couldn’t help but feel a tug of remorse in his chest. His heart thudded, but he swallowed down the pitiful whine that climbed up his throat. The spirit of Cerberus pooled in his stomach, begging him to rush to their master's side. Roen ignored the aching want; his face showed nothing. The only clue to his upset was unshed tears brimming in the corners of his eyes.
“Come.” The demand was nearly a whisper as the lord was slowly dimming. His essence pulled into the locked book of purgatory. Roen inched closer, ignoring the way Cerberus wanted to lunge at its master, “Loyal pup, promise me one thing. Look after the grimoire.” The words were mush, but Roen knew what he wanted—a final act of loyalty to his lord. The blue-haired figure head allowed himself to shrink, allowing his limbs to condense into the small body of a pooch. The last of the lord’s essence faded, and Cerberus’s spirit ached to follow. Roen trudged away, ignoring the heaviness that had seeped into his heart. He spared a glance at Arlond, the Devil of liberation. Roen knew the realm would be in decent hands, a heavy hand but less dangerous than his master. The new king didn’t spare a glance at the pup as Roen left.
It was the scent that drew him out of the Demon Realm. The sweetness of elderberry mingled with cloves and nutmeg. The smell of the grimoire, warm and inviting to the swirling shadows of the world. The small form Roen had chosen remained hidden behind a field of brush and lilacs. Gleeful giggles of a small child floated around Roen. Tinkling chimes were what popped into the small dog's head. This must be her—the grimoire. I lay my life before her, lord Maksis.
“Ritsuka, come along, darling. Lunch time!” The words were chipper and full of adoration. Maria, Roen’s mind supplied. The lover of Maksis. The dog steadied himself as he felt the spirit of Cerberus churn in his stomach. The loyal guard of Maksis felt compelled to protect the heart of Maksis as well. The two were in agreement for the first time since the lord's departure from the Demon Realm. Quickly, Roen surged forward, the scent of elderberries guiding him towards a small toddling child. Her hair was a rich mahogany with wide eyes of honeycomb. Her brows were furrowed in concentration as she chased after her mother’s words. The aforementioned mother stood patiently at the doorway, her eyes once trained on her daughter, moved to Roen. He lowered himself closer to the ground, submitting. A single nod of okay surged the figure head of Cerberus forward. Beside Maria stood a boy a few years older than the grimoire. He had blood-red hair and the smell of rats clinging to his skin and clothing. A Dhampir, the sudden realization startled the small guard. He knew Maria was fond of Maksis, but had no idea she had found a Vampire lover as well. Darkness flocks to the soft kindness of the sun. Roen knew this, so he decided to hold his thoughts in the back of his mind and wait till he could speak to his new mistress.
“Aunt Maria, look. A dog!” The words of the Dhampir were soft, and the name of his mistress felt clunky coming out of his mouth. It held an air of uncertainty as Maria sighed,
“I told you, Lindo, you don’t have to call me aunt. I am just as much your mother as I am to Ritsuka. You’re her guardian after all, right?” A nod of okay, and the Dhampir dropped his gaze to the grass. That explains that thought, Roen.
“Mama, Bubba, Puppy!” The tinkling chimes from earlier spiraled out of the small Ritsuka. Her grubby hands wound themselves into his fur with excitement. Panic took over his heart as it th-th-thudded painfully in his chest. The smell of darkness and nature furled itself around him.
“Easy, Ritsuka. You have to be gentle with such a little puppy.” Maria teased. She could read in-between the guards' glamour; she was trained in sensing the dark beings after all. Maria knew Roen would be fine from a few small pulls and tugs of a child’s hand. Yet, she eased the grip of the Grimoire’s fingers with a soft smile, “There. You have to pet the puppy. Come over here, Lindo. Go ahead and give the pup a pet, too. I have a feeling he’s going to stick around.” Another knowing smile was thrown Roen’s way. The sparkle in Maria’s eye was a promise that they would talk later. Roen made sure to swallow his nerves.
“Au-mother. I don’t think I should.” The Dhampir moved away from Roen and the giggly Grimoire. He knows too…Roen knew the boy had eyes to see past the mist of the darkness. He could tell Devil, from Vamp, to any other creature that went bump in the night. Roen resisted the urge to smirk at the baby Dhampir; they had always had such a strained relationship anyway.
“That’s fine, Lindo, but I assure you that this pup won’t bite.” A warning glare was sent Roen’s way. If the Dhampir was going to be important to the Mistress and the Grimoire, Cerberus and Roen could behave. He prided himself on being a good, loyal guard. He kept his canines closed and leaned towards the quivering Dhampir. Lindo eyed him suspiciously, rightfully so, and eased a trembling hand out. Roen resisted the urge to roll his eyes. The Dhampir’s hand was cooler than his Grimoire counterpart. The shakiness made the pet feel messy, but Roen didn’t move. The Cerberus spirit seemed to preen at the touch regardless of who it was. Home, it purred. The feeling of safety flooded beneath Roen’s skin. The mistress being near made everything better for Cerberus. Roen pretended he didn’t feel the same way.
“Alright, talk.” The kids had long since been put to bed. The small dog had curled up beside the fire, a deadly chill in the air despite the summer season. Roen tilted his head to the side while Maria seethed in her own corner of the living room, “Don’t play dumb. I know a servant of Maksis when I see them. There is always some kind of subtle golden glow to you all.” The admittance of seeing the glamour had been a small shock to Roen, trained to see the subtle blur of the glamour, sure, but the whole golden shine of the magic? The mistress knew how to shock him, that was for sure. He let the gold fall and allowed himself to be seen in his old vessel, the figurehead of Cerberus. He could feel fatigue within his varying limbs as he found himself cross-legged on the soft carpet,
“Gold, huh? I thought you were trained to see the blur. I didn’t know you could see the magic in its entirety. I figured the Dhampir was the only one here strong enough to see past the glamour. You are ever impressive, Miss Maria.”
“Flattery gets you nowhere, dog. Tell me, what are you doing here?” The words were cold, making the beast of Cerberus flinch.
“Maksis has fallen. The liberator has sealed him away. His last wish was for me to guard the Grim-”
“Do not call my daughter that vile name.” The scorn of Maria caused a whimper to escape Roen’s throat. He pretended to clear it from sudden congestion,
“Vile? The power of one of the greatest devils flows through your offspring's veins. You could own the world. The Grim-”
“Ritsuka. That is her name. To be anything more than human is vile.”
“Don’t let the Dhampir hear you say that.” A standstill silence held between the two. The blue-haired devil smirked as Maria relented with a sigh, “You know nothing of my family. My mistakes. My father. You. Know. Nothing.” The words were punctuated with an annoyed growl. Roen shuttered away the feeling of nausea that swirled through his stomach.
“I know plenty, Miss Maria. Are you so naive to believe that Lord Maksis wouldn’t have kept an eye on you? He loved you, you know. The warmth and kindness you gave him despite the golden aura of devil magic. Your keen eyes knew, did your father have the sight? Did your sister?” Roen kept his voice light and teasing, ignoring the pain of want. He had always been fond of knowledge,
“No. Marta had no sight. Neither did my Father despite his morbid curiosity of all things hidden in the dark. I think my sight is what made him favor me. My exploits only angered him, but my sight…that gave him a look into the depths.” Maria grew quiet as her eyes glazed over, “I knew what was preying on my sister, but I didn’t have the heart to break it to her. She was just so happy…the Dhampir is just as much my sin as hers.
