Trauma Team (Cont)
Well, I finished Trauma Team , and so can record my thoughts a bit more on what I think about it....
(see here for my first post on it)
Maria: Does "First Response" type medic activities (EMT, paramedic, what not). She's a hotheaded, highly independent person, to where sometimes she doesn't get along with others, but is skilled at what she does. Kinda reminded me of me, in ways, lol. Her stages are similar to Surgery, but only involve first response type actions (stabilizing the patient to be operated/transported). The triage system of trying to stabilize multiple patients was fascinating and fun! Gameplay wise I think was my favorite in the game, and storywise, she's about as entertaining as Gabriel, I think, lol.
Tomoe: Does endoscopy, aka moving through very compact spaces with a robot on a tube? Was a little tedious on my hand, similar to Hank, although not as bad because I could stabilize the patient through stabilizer injections rather than so many strikes and I'm out. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't enough of a twist on surgery to make it absolutely interesting. But hell, she was the daughter of a Japanese ninja and had a ninja butler???? (lawl)
Misc things:
- When you complete all the doctor's individual stages, it opens up to a storyline where all of them act more together involving a pandemic situation (won't spoil everything though). Story was interesting, and felt closer to a traditional game as you had to drag through things you might not have necessarily liked *cough*autopsies*cough* *cough*ninja girl*cough*, to get to the end.
- OTOH, in this story, I felt Naomi (Forensic Investigator) finally opened up, as the latter half had her char going through some pretty intense stuff.
-Gameplay wise, of course the difficulty got jacked up in these missions, which is acceptable, and like alot of Atlus games, at times, maddening, lol.
All in all a pleasing game. :) Now...back to Fallout 3, I finally got the GOTY edition which means all the add-on packs are mine buah ha ha ha >D
Trauma Team
I don't have a big list of experience with Wii games. I passed over the console because at least at launch, there were only so many good games, and since then, there are more bad games than good because Nintendo wants everybody and his mother to buy a Wii at 200 dollars. (reminds me of the NES era somewhat)
But, my friend has a Wii, so, now and again I can pop in a game and enjoy it when I have the time.
This is one I got hooked on from moment one. Trauma Team is part of the "Trauma Center" series by Atlus, on the DS and Wii.....crazy medical games where you control the tools to do operations.
This one took a bit of a twist on that though, and instead of just one or two doctors who are surgeons....you have six medical professionals who specializes in various stuff.
The controls are generally responsive and fun, each doctor's experience differs. So far I have done 4 of them enough to kinda understand what's going on.
CR-S01: The surgery guy. Deadpan jackass who reminded me of Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing (kinda sounded like him too, thanks to fucking Nolan North)...the traditional Trauma Center ish gameplay (surgery- don't let the patient's vitals reach 0) with some fun twists.
Gabriel: Diagnostician....no surgery, he diagnoses patients. This would be horribly dry if he wasn't a snarky guy who I kept on thinking he was effin Spike Spiegel (2nd guy on the cover, srsly, LOOK AT HIM!), and he has a straight edge robot computer to help him diagnose. Also has a convenient problem with family/life/apathy.
Hank: Orthopedics...the way his tools were designed was interesting, but also, was intensive on my wrist seriously. After his missions I had to take a break half the time, because his was similar to the main surgeon, but, you could only mess up a certain amount of times before the operation stopped, rather than vitals going to 0 and antibiotic gel/green stuff in the syringe being able to keep the patient alive if you were quick enough/no time limits on a particular mission. Probably because if you shattered bones, well, eff retrying. LOL. But his missions had a lot of carefully moving and tilting the Wiimote...at moments I was yelling at the screen "MY WRIST DOESN'T GO THAT WAY, DAMMIT!"
Storywise was interesting enough
Naomi: A carryover char from Trauma Center: Second Opinion...forensics. Similar to Gabriel's game mode, no surgery. She analyzes a body, crime scene evidence, and testimony to determine cause of death and where possible, a killer if it was homicide. Also reminded me of Phoenix Wright. Point, click, deduce.
Unfortunately, she lacks the snarky commentary and light hearted moments Gabriel has, and this, paired with the also dry gameplay...makes her mode, well, incredibly dry. Don't be tired while playing this game otherwise you might fall asleep while deducing evidence as I did. :/
It's fun to analyze gameplay. More coming when I get around to playing it.
RogueGames 1- Batman: Arkham Asylum
So.....I finally finished a video game after many months of um, not actively playing games. I got Batman: Arkham City for Christmas- just- I hadn't finished Arkham Asylum before hand. Oops.
Supposedly Arkham City improves upon Asylum, but, my initial thoughts about the design+gameplay of its predecessor? Great, so, to get mind blown by Arkham City is going to be something, I suppose. Never did I feel too constricted about the navigation or the combat system, it was intuitive and fairly easy to use (although I still have not gotten through the entire combat challenge maps- I'm not a stickler for 100% finished in games anymore- "finished" to me is generally story mode finished, maybe if there are hidden map secrets and such). The cameras were also smooth which is a big plus, alot of these action adventure games screw up the camera systems. (I remember as a kid I wanted to smash DMC 1's cameras, also Resident Evil, oh, thanks Capcom...) Maps were easy to navigate and complemented the story.
Story wise, hell yes, it was great, written by the great Paul Dini of Batman: The Animated Series fame, and speaking of B:TAS, it brought back legends from that series like Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as Joker? HELL YES. Other characters like Bane (HELL YES), Riddler, Harley, Poison Ivy, etc, making appearances? Yes. Great art? Hell yes.
I'm no slouch to Batman games, I mean, I played my fair share of them when I was a kid. Some of them were good (Adventures of Batman and Robin for Genesis), some of them were um, okay I guess (Batman Forever for Genesis/SNES)- and some of them flat out stunk. (Batman and Robin for PSX- holy awful game, Batman)
But this one- was not a 'franchise' or 'movie' game, aka the derogatory term gamers tend to use to describe a bad video game with licensed characters. It was a 'game', and that means if it weren't around Batman, it would have worked game design wise. It just...fit.
When you are sucked into a world, and it fits like a glove, that is the sign of good game design. You're not supposed to notice flaws. If you do, that was a problem some developer forgot to fix. IMHO.
(Now if only I could get the Riddler's voice out of my head - HE IS ANNOYING IN THAT GAME- but at the same time, addicting, lol. But Riddler is one of my favorite Batman characters anyways, I think I only like Bane better....)
No complaints here. On to the next game, which I haven't quite decided yet- could be Arkham City, maybe not. I'm sitting on so many video games it's not funny.
I just finished Batman: Arkham Asylum. Full write up is forthcoming because I said I'd spend more time analyzing game design just for the hell of it- but first......
Riddler, you are an annoying mofo in that game. I HAVE YOUR CATCH PHRASES STUCK IN MY HEAD. All because I just HAD to spend the time finding all 240 of your Riddle solutions.....doh.

It was also crazy staring at reference pictures and realizing how many designs he's had. While I am always a fan of Frank Gorshin Riddler- it's rather old fashioned. Riddler's designs for Batman:Hush x Batman TAS x My own quirks=yup.
