Numerous works, from the ancient to the baroque, have been cited as sources of inspiration for Velázquez. The nude Venuses of the Italian painters, such as Giorgione's Sleeping Venus (c. 1510) and Titian's Venus of Urbino (1538), were the main precedents. In this work, Velázquez combined two established poses for Venus: recumbent on a couch or a bed, and gazing at a mirror.

Rokeby Venus, also known as Venus at her Mirror, is considered by many critics as one of the most erotically charged images of any age.
A chance to visit this church was afforded during a Heritage Impact Assessment of the wider area. The church of St Mary, is Grade II* listed and was consecrated in 1778. Classically styled by Sir Thomas Robinson (1703-1777), MP for Morpeth and former governor of Barbados. His estate at Rokeby is immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in his poem 'Rokeby'. Robinson also designed the west wing of Castle Howard, and an almost identical church at Glynde in Sussex. Unfortunately the building is on the Heritage at Risk register.
