Outside of the remains of the lab, it was pandemonium. Alarms, emergency response teams, panic and fear and determination.
Inside the remains of the lab, it was chaos. Terror, madness, confusion and pain permeated the air, the substance, the very fundamental space within. Thirty five souls, no longer tethered to their bodies, but instead to the warp and weft of a fundamental force, and to each other. No longer with the limited sensory input of 35 individual bodies, tempered by nerve signal speeds, thousands of biological hacks to turn a bunch of jumpy, staticky signals into an illusion of solid views. Instead, they had raw, direct access to the thing that made photons real. And they had raw, direct access, to each others minds.
Sensory overload, distress at sudden discorporation, and the events that led up to this state result in 35 minds screaming in unison, a psychic scream heard throughout Galaxy City, Paragon City, and in fact several states by the more psychically inclined.
Those who avoided passing out from the psychic concussion quickly alerted SERAPH, which had several teams on standby for events like this. That said, while scientific accidents were not unheard of in Paragon (and in fact had led to many of its heroes), nobody was prepared for the fundamental chaos that was the birth of a potentially god-like entity. The first SERAPH squad on site set up a number of containment processes around the exterior of the lab's building, which remained intact. Upon the second squad's arrival, they then entered the lab.
It took them 5 seconds to all enter, and the utter unreality of what they were seeing drove 5 of them to their knees. Then, in the space of 5.6 microseconds, all six of them discorporated. Five of them were completely unprepared for anything of the sort. The sixth was luckier, he happened to already be briefed on the research here. For five of them, their minds did not survive the transition. The sixth made it through. He provided a nucleus for the other 35 souls, a stability that lasted long enough for them to restrain themselves, and at least... Ignore most of the sensory data.
When the second SERAPH team entered, they found equations floating in the air, Cerenkov blue. The fundamental chaos that had been in the room became merely massive destruction. And SERAPH reached out to DATA to build a containment suit.
For the 36 souls that were now irrevocably bound together, now there was a new goal. What to do with themselves.
