East coast could see rolling blackouts as data centers strain the electric grid

PJM, which services nearly 70 million Americans, could be forced to trigger blackouts during periods of high demand

Warning signs are already flashing red. This summer, heat waves surged demand for power on the PJM grid to “near-record highs” as consumers tried to cool their homes, according to the Journal. PJM responded by requesting that all power plants operate at full capacity. PJM also paid multiple large energy users, including factories, to cease operations.

While historically rare, rolling blackouts can be deadly. Over 200 people died in Texas in the winter of 2021 after the grid operator in the state ordered utilities to institute rolling blackouts to prevent complete grid failure amid freezing temperatures. Some Texans were without power for days.

A few months ago, PJM came up with proposals intended to balance the needs of both consumers and data centers. One plan said they would slash power to data centers during periods of strain.

Tech companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google opposed the plan, claiming it unfairly singled out data centers. They responded by offering their own proposals, which would make going offline voluntary.

We're having rolling brownouts every hour in Tennessee. Meaning their turning the power out for 13 minutes and turning it back on. TVA must have ordered local power companies to perform them to prevent electrical grid strain. Cooking Christmas dinner (which my family eats Christmas Eve) is going to be a bit of an adventure but I'm happy to have power at all.

White Christmas is sneaking it's way into the naughty list...

why does the power grid have to fucking suck?? why haven’t they fixed it knowing we’ve had problems the past couple years??? my power has flickered 3 times because of the weather and i’m not a happy camper😑😑😑

i meant to type this yesterday but alas, i was hit by the problem i was going to give yall a heads up about before i even COULD. So the rolling blackouts in texas have been hitting everyone pretty hard and finally hit Us. They’re going on and off again and most places that previously offered help simply CAN’T anymore. 

We are out of toilet paper, have no candles or batteries for flashlights, and don’t really have much in terms of blankets. We’ve already been hit with “boil your water” emergencies across the greater area and internet likely wont be up for long. Please, if you can, consider helping or at least Boosting this.

Rolling blackouts and worse today across the Midwest down to Texas

So Kansas is joining Texas and Oklahoma in rolling electricity blackouts ranging from 30-60 minutes today. They say to reduce electricity use by not using space heaters... but also not to use too much gas, because power plants use it.

And don't run stove burners to heat your house, of course, because it can build up CO2 and deadly CO.

Friends in Texas are seeing broken pipes, power outages that aren't coming back on, power plants freezing due to no insulation, and deadly consequences for homeless people.
