just wanted to say thank you for your helly saw trap fic.... it feels like everyone is in the saw trap in that fic universe and situation in some ways. imark omark and helly. The switching. The desires. The innie and outie bleed and the fear of disappearing or being consumed. Such delicious territory.

omark and imark gaining each other almost. consuming. Wondering what will happen when your other self appears and you aren't there.

iMark is dealing with so much in that universe. Some version of the memory bleed his outie is experiencing, plus the fear he could switch and hurt the person he cares about most (he pushed her once, what if he gets desperate and does something worse?), and he’s losing already limited time with her every time it happens.

I cut it bc there wasn’t anywhere good for it to go but there was originally a bit where Helly recounts that iMark tried to insist they stop sleeping together after oMark hurts her, and she’s like, please, I need you here, I’m not letting him take you from me, etc.

what feels weird about publishing fanfictions as novels to me is that the primary function of published novels is storytelling whereas the primary function of fan content is play. like in a fanfic, you can do a lot of telling vs showing because you are playing, and the playful/informal aspect is what makes the reading enjoyable. but doing the same thing in a standalone novel is shitty writing because an original story is not the same thing as a fanfic. and just as fanfics shouldn't be held to a professional writing standard to be considered "good writing," fic tropes become corny and boring when they're presented as original novels. do i sound insane. whatever

this is a great point. fanfic is playing in someone else's sandbox for the love the characters/world. all of the heavy lifting is done already ie: characters, world-building, established dynamics and histories, etc. aspects can be changed to suit whatever the author wants to do but it's still playing with dolls. it's a great place to have fun but when fanworks are adapted into original stories, the stories often fall apart.

fanfic is a great place to hone skills as a writer and learn how to craft a narrative but taking a story that's supported by an existing IP, removing that structure then replacing it with something new rarely works. it's working backwards, forcing a square peg into a round hole, removing a solid framework with popsicle sticks. the structure is flimsy and the holes are glaring. putting the cart before the horse, etc etc.

i don't say this to disparage fanfic writing (i've written a few of my own) but it doesn't lend itself to original world-building. even if the author created many new aspects to the existing IP, the foundation isn't theirs and breaking it down to build something original is extremely challenging. more often than not, it feels like a copy of a copy of a copy, diluted to nothing but tropes because that's all that's left.
