For this week’s #goodtypetuesday: The biggest lesson I’ve learned as a lettered has to be something like charging a deposit or only sending the files after receiving payment. However, that’s a not-chill lesson. Here’s a chill lesson: one of the best ways for me to improve has been to look at work of artists and designers who came generations before me. From the 6th century BC to the 1960’s, our ancestors have spent many years figuring out how to make the best looking letters, all without the help of Adobe Suite or ipads. That’s a lot of knowledge to soak up, and doing so builds the foundation necessary to be any kind of decent at lettering. . Pictured here are my humble tributes to the work of far greater artists: ‘Study’ in Roman Square Capitals as seen on Trajan’s column, ‘the’ in humanist hand, and ‘classics’ in a roundhand script, all pulled together with some faux-pointed pen flourishes inspired by George Bickham. . . . . . #theornamentalpenman #roundhand #trajans #romansquarecapitals #foundational #lettering #flourishing #hatching #blackandwhitr #penandink #ornament #ornamentallettering #graphicdesign #ornament #penandink #calligraphy #handlettering #typography #type #goodtype @goodtype #tyxca #typetopia #designspiration @designspiration
