Ron Wright, 67, is remembered as a statesman and staunch conservative who showed civility to all.
In January of 2019, 65-year-old Republican Ron Wright was sworn in as a new member of the House of Representatives for Texas. He was a staunch conservative and a stauncher Trump supporter: on January 6, 2021, even after Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, Wright still formally objected to certification of the 2020 election results, and on January 13, he voted against Trump’s impeachment.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year, Wright made his positions abundantly clear: he opposed government “handouts,” downplayed the risks, didn’t much like wearing masks, and firmly believed that reopening the country was more important than anything else. Some examples:
April 17, 2020: “We should move expeditiously to re-open the economy. ... The American people are resilient, but they have suffered tremendously under the weight of this closed economy. Measures enacted by Congress have provided limited relief. More government is not the answer to these economic woes — reopening the economy is the answer.”
April 23, 2020: Wright skipped the House vote on a second COVID-19 stimulus package.
August 19, 2020: “Between social distancing guidelines and face-mask mandates, our lives today bear little resemblance to the lives we led mere months ago.”
October 1, 2020: Wright skipped the House vote on another COVID-19 relief package.
October 12, 2020: “Our campaign is all about getting our nation back to work after the COVID pandemic.”
December 21, 2020: Wright skipped the House vote on yet another COVID-19 relief package.
December 21, 2020: “Many of the nation’s school districts have been closed to in-person learning since the spring and some school districts have not announced any plan or timeline for reopening in 2021. ... Congress and the American people want assurances that funds are being used to address the urgent need to reopen schools.”
December 29, 2020: “It’s time for the government to open up America’s small businesses.”
