and YOU over there!
I'm ready for it! Actually, I wrote a whole one-shot based on the game A Rook by Any Other Name, the one with the Shadow Dragons.
On Maleficarum 2751 words, pre-game, a bit bloody, availiable on AO3.
Here's a random snippet.
Living fire was rare here. Lucanis noticed a warm orange glow ahead and crept toward it. He hadn’t imagined it—the light was moving, as if someone was carrying a torch. He picked up the pace slightly and caught up with the source of light.
Based on her gait, it was indeed a young woman. Dressed in rags patched a hundred times over, she moved incredibly gracefully and very quietly—even now, Lucanis couldn’t hear her footsteps. Poor people usually stomped or shuffled, slouched, or limped, but she walked with regal posture, almost dancing. The lantern in her hand barely moved.
didn't realize just how awful it is to have the kid of your inquisitor as your rook until i really started thinking about my new rook, feros lavellan. it's the worst reunion ever. varric? dies. harding? dies. dorian? fucked up haircut. morrigan? mythal's memories are in her brain now and who knows where kieran is. southern thedas? going to absolute hell as he's too busy trying to stop the gods everywhere else to defend his home. his mom? still not over her god of an ex-boyfriend after like ten years and is still dying of the anchor. solas? killed varric, lied about it, manipulated him, trapped him in the regret prison right after harding dies, tried to trick him AGAIN into bringing down the veil, and then kissed feros' mother before almost walking off into the fade with her. it's just "i hate my mom's shitty ex-boyfriend" the game for him
Cultural HeadCanon Requests
I’ve been meaning to ask this for a long time, but has anyone made up any cultural headcanons for their Rook/Rook’s heritage?
I’d be so interested to hear if so! (Holidays, social norms, dress, food culture, anything!)
This can be for any background, and as specific as you want! Meaning it can be a HC for the cultural lives of Denerim City elves, surfacer dwarves residing in Rivain who are also Andrastian, Qunari women who are born in summer on one specific island, etc etc!
My example:
I HC that Lisel’s clan (Dalish, nomadic but residing primarily in Antiva) designated her as hearth keeper after circumstances around her birth. They believed she had Sylaise’s blessing because:
S he was a mage, she was born in early spring, she was delivered silently.
Sylaise is believed to ease childbirth and watch over children, so Lisel’s calmness at birth was seen as a sign of Sylaise’s favor. Her spring birth also relates to this (Spring = new life, childhood) and her magehood was just taken as a general sign of favor.
Will I one day clean these up digitally? Perhaps.
Will that day be soon? Probably not lmao.
"The heart of the dread god of lies should belong to someone capable of keeping it, shouldn't it?" - Morrigan's raspy, flirtatious voice echoed around the room as Rook searched for her with his eyes, to no avail. - "Look up the Inquisition, once a force for order in a time of ruin. It was there that a certain little person managed to put a stop to Solas' plans. The Inquisitor was the only one besides Mythal who ever caused him to falter." - Like an ominous warning, the woman appeared behind Rook, hovering over his back as if about to devour him.
"Leave the child alone, Morrigan. As if everything he was going through wasn't enough, he doesn't need a witch tormenting him" - a warmer, more knowing and sweet voice soothed the flirtation and tension Morrigan had brought with her. With a firm, graceful step, the one person they could trust to bring Solas at last back to his feet was present.
Even if Solas had destroyed her heart and abandoned her, they both knew there were undeniable things, like the great love they had for each other despite all the bad things. It was obvious that the inquisitor was furious and wanted to tear his ears off, but she was also eager to see this being who had once made her sigh as a young girl who had just had her first love. You could tell how much love she had for him because whenever he was mentioned, her ears tinkled perhaps paying more attention and her eyes had a particular gleam in them.
Rook could almost feel Solas shouting a "take me to my wife" at him and he could understand it.... Oh inquisitor, the woman you are.
"Rook, my name is.... Well, you probably already know it, I belong to the Lavellan clan, it's nice to meet you" - it wasn't just her voice, it was the gentleness of her walk, of her gestures, this woman had finished off Corypheus, she had been in command of the inquisition, she was rough. Rook heard many, many anecdotes of the inquisitor being a bloody beast on the battlefield, in fact he expected something more like a savage, but no. She was totally different, like a queen, had the bearing of a noble, ironic being a dalish.
Damn the dreadwolf, this woman had already captivated they and they had only shared a couple of words.
*copes by making a new Rook to romance Bellara*
Meet Mithren Lavellan, he's the son of my Josie romance Inquisitor (Rosemary Lavellan) and he was already about 13 or 14 in da:i. He joined the shadow dragons when his mother's work as inquisitor took her to tevinter for a time and that's where he joined Varric on his mission to stop Solas, we'll see how that goes for him!
Happy oc kiss week!
