Last night

three more trees came down in the Woods. On top of the two that came down in the storm a few weeks ago. On top of the old beaver dam.

Not much of a root ball for such a tall tree. The ground is soaked from all the rain, and the tree was weakened after getting hit by one of its friends when it let go of an embankment. The two of them then took down the third tree and they all landed on the unfortunate aforementioned first two trees. Nature's dominoes.

On the plus side, if another beaver comes along and decides to set up shop....

THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

I finally discovered why the plants in one of my little vegie beds were doing poorly.

This great tangle of Silver Birch tree roots had almost entirely matted the whole 1 metre square bed. The tree achieved this in under a year.

Hacking it all out and moving the soil was a sweaty, blister creating, pain in arse. Am especially annoyed as this was a carefully constructed lasagne bed with great natural ingredients in it. The corn and the Butternut pumpkin didn’t really stand a chance.

Have now had to line the ground with thick plastic before reconstructing the garden on top.
