There's something @rootofallevil pointed out in our discussions about Joowon's and Dongsik's partnership that I just couldn't move on from because it's such a revelation:

They've already seen each other at their worst since the very beginning.

But the thing is, as again pointed out by @rootofallevil, remarkably: it must have been a fascinating revelation and sort of grudging admiration and respect for them over time too, how even the worst they initially assumed of each other is so much better than they initially thought.

Yes, Dongsik is a lunatic. But Joowon has come to see that his lunacy is always borne out of his sheer overflowing care for the people he fiercely loves—and still has an overwhelming surplus of kindness and empathy to spare even to complete strangers.

Yes, Joowon is a stubborn brat. But Dongsik has come to learn that it's part and parcel of his absolutism when it comes to his moral compass, and his determination to enact justice at all cost, no matter the cost to his own self, if it's the right thing to do.

It must have astounded Joowon to see how a man who has been brutally tormented by everything life threw at him only took all that pain as a lesson to never let anyone hurt like that ever again.

And it must have awed Dongsik to see someone so utterly self-sacrificial in the pursuit of justice and morality that it's so different from everyone he has ever known in a position of power to have always been self-serving.

Dongsik and Joowon have already seen each other at their absolute worst so there are no more masks to wear, absolutely nothing to hide from each other, which is partly why their partnership had gotten to an intense start:

They skipped way ahead of all the formalities and social niceties that you usually start with in any social interaction or relationship, and they went straight ahead to: "I don't care if you see the worst about me because I don't care about being liked by you."

And yet ironically, that's exactly what drew them to each other, again and again:

Because the worst they've seen in each other—that they've allowed each other to see—is exactly the reason for them to finally come to love.

No pretenses, no masks—just who they are bared at their core, in all their ugly vulnerability.

And by the end of it all, this is them saying (as I quote Sarah Kay):

"I've seen the best of you, and the worst of you—and I choose both."
