Show Alicent: Deals with her abuse by the patriarchy by declaring war on her friend for having premarital sex, and works to uphold the patriarchy by usurping the first Queen of Westeros in favour of her serial rapist son. Despite claiming to fear for her children's lives she turns down the peaceful solution of a betrothal, citing disgust at marrying her daughter to a 'common-featured' bastard.
TG Stans: "TB just can't handle complex female characters - in fact when you think about it Alicent is the real feminist character!"
Book Rhaenyra: Upon ascending the throne she has to deal with a war-torn realm, an empty treasury stolen by the greens, and the sickening grief of losing four children. She is faced with the difficult decision of having to raise unpopular taxes while needing to keep the lords on her side - protecting both the fragile stability of her reign and the survival of her remaining children. Under these circumstances she is faced with the dilemma of deciding on the inheritance rights of two girls with younger brothers. Her Hand warns her that deciding in the girls' favour will alienate the lords forever. Her husband insists she should reward two dragonseeds with lordships by serving up the girls to be childbrides. Caught between a rock and a hard place, she placates the lords by deciding in favour of the sons, and placates the dragonseeds by offering them smallholdings on Driftmark instead. The decision backfires as said dragonseeds then turn on her, committing one of the most brutal war crimes of the Dance. This drives Rhaenyra into paranoia over further betrayals and the subsequent danger to her remaining children - made worse by her panicked council and the word of her trusted Mistress of Whispers. In a tragic twist, in her fear and paranoia she is encouraged to suspect the friends of her own deceased son, shattering his legacy of forming the Dragonseeds.
TG Stans: "SEE SHE WAS JUST A HYPOCRITE ALL ALONG! SHE DIDN'T CARE ABOUT WOMEN OR BASTARDS SHE JUST THOUGHT SHE WAS THE EXCEPTION - NO SHADES OF GREY HERE, SHE'S JUST A BITCH AND YOU ALL FELL FOR A GIRLBOSS-"
Book Helaena: Jumps out of a window
TG Stans: "And THAT is how you go insane with grief in a nice feminine way!"
If you're still down for asoiaf asks, what's your favorite subplot, the subplot that took the longest to dawn on you, and the one that's grown on you the most?
This is a very minor subplot, but I need to know the identity of Gyles Rosby's mysterious ward, and what effect that will have on things going forward.
For most of the series, Gyles Rosby is the lord of Rosby, a town just north east of King's Landing. Gyles spends the majority of the books at court until AFFC, when he dies after a long illness. There is then a dispute over who should takeover his lands, as Gyles did not have any children. Falyse Stokeworth believes that she and her husband should be granted Rosby by the crown, but worries that an unnamed ward who has been recently living at Rosby will inherit instead. Cersei also comes up with a plan to disinherit the ward, and orders Pycelle to tell the ward that it was Gyles' last wish that all the Rosby lands go to Tommen.
However, this all gets forgotten. Falyse Stokeworth is given to Qyburn by Cersei, and she ends up dying due to his experiments. Cersei herself gets distracted by everything going on with the High Sparrow and there is no evidence Pycelle carried out her order, and in the Epilogue of ADWD, Kevan elects to not make a decision on the future of Rosby as they have more important things to talk about.
That probably means that, by the beginning of TWOW, Rosby is likely being ruled by Gyles Rosby's mysterious ward.
Now, there is only one other Rosby mentioned in the entirety of the ASOIAF saga: Bethany Rosby, sixth wife of Walder Frey. It is therefore likely that Bethany's children are in line to inherit Rosby, and one of them could probably be Gyles' ward. Bethany and Walder had five children together: Perwyn, Benfrey, Willamen, Olyvar, and Roslin. We know the ward is male, so that rules out Roslin (who is busy being married to Edmure Tully at this point, anyway). We also know that the ward was present in Rosby when Falyse Stokeworth tried to stop there in AFFC. That rules out Perwyn (who is at the siege of Riverrun in AFFC), Benfrey (who died in the Red Wedding in ASOS), and Willamen (who is a maester at the Citadel).
That just leaves Olyvar Frey.
And what is significant about Olyvar Frey?
Olyvar Frey was Robb Stark's squire, and was kept out of planning for the Red Wedding because he was so devoted to his master.
If Rosby is now being run by Olyvar Frey, there could be significant ramifications going forward, as Rosby provides most of King's Landing's food. If Rosby is run by a Stark loyalist, how are the Lannisters and Tyrells going to keep King's Landing fed if they end up facing a pro-Stark/Tully army? This becomes especially significant if you think the TWOW Prologue is going to see Edmure being busted out of jail, and some sort of Tully resurgence happening. If Olyvar is in control of Rosby, his connection to Edmure through his sister Roslin and his own devotion to Robb's memory might shift him into their camp, meaning that the Lannister/Tyrell alliance has a huge logistics problem in trying to keep King's Landing fed. It will only be made worse when the Tyrells are distracted by Euron in Oldtown and Aegon's invasion ramps up properly.
I am therefore really excited to see where this little subplot goes in TWOW.

On Rosby and Stokeworth
There is one particular matter that I don't see brought up a lot whenever Rosby and Stokeworth are used against Rhaenyra. And that is the matter of Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White:
Their deaths left her with a nettlesome problem of succession, however. As it happened, each of the “faithless friends” left a daughter; Rosby’s was a maid of twelve, Stokeworth’s a girl of six. Prince Daemon proposed that the former be wed to Hard Hugh the blacksmith’s son (who had taken to calling himself Hugh Hammer), the latter to Ulf the Sot (now simply Ulf White), keeping their lands black whilst suitably rewarding the seeds for their valor in battle. But the Queen’s Hand argued against this, for both girls had younger brothers. Rhaenyra’s own claim to the Iron Throne was a special case, the Sea Snake insisted; her father had named her as his heir. Lords Rosby and Stokeworth had done no such thing. Disinheriting their sons in favor of their daughters would overturn centuries of law and precedent, and call into question the rights of scores of other lords throughout Westeros whose own claims might be seen as inferior to those of elder sisters. It was fear of losing the support of such lords, Munkun asserts in True Telling, that led the queen to decide in favor of Lord Corlys rather than Prince Daemon. The lands, castles, and coin of Houses Rosby and Stokeworth were awarded to the sons of the two executed lords, whilst Hugh Hammer and Ulf White were knighted and granted small holdings on the isle of Driftmark.

I love your page! I don't know if you've been asked before, but what do you think will be the fate of the Rosby inheritance subplot? It's a very minor one, and as a result I've never seen much discussion on it (although I've seen rumblings that the sympathetic Rosby Freys will take over). Any thoughts?
So, this is a question that I love, because I have a strong (that is, strongly held) theory about this:
The Rosby ward is Olyvar Frey.
For those of you who don’t remember, Olyvar Frey is the eighteenth son of Walder Frey, the fourth-born of his marriage with Bethany Rosby. Olyvar became Robb’s squire in the deal Catelyn negotiates with Walder Frey at the Twins (the same that betrothed Robb to a Frey maiden and Arya to young Elmar). Though Olyvar is a little old for a highborn squire - he’s two years older than his liege - he takes his duties seriously, and fights bravely by Robb’s side at the Whispering Wood. He’s so loyal to Robb, in fact, that he wants to stay even when Robb dishonors House Frey with his Westerling marriage; his Frey relatives force him away and (probably) keep him away from the Red Wedding, since he was thought to be too loyal to Robb and the Starks to participate in the Frey massacre.
Now, what do we know about Rosby’s ward? Not much. Here’s what they say when Gyles Rosby dies:
“As to Lord Gyles, no doubt our Father Above will judge him justly. He left no children?”
“No children of his body, but there is a ward …”
“… not of his blood.” Cersei dismissed that annoyance with a flick of her hand. (“Cersei IX”, A Feast for Crows)
But Pycelle is clearly uncomfortable with Cersei’s insistence on taking the Rosby lands for the crown:
“Lord Gyles loved His Grace with all his heart,” Pycelle was saying, “but … his ward …” (“Cersei IX”, A Feast for Crows)
That suggests the ward is not merely grown (and could offer resistance), but someone who would be interested in the Rosby inheritance himself. It would have to be a relative - someone who could stand to inherit the castle and lands. Certainly, Cersei says the ward is “not of his blood”, but what does that mean? Cersei could mean it that he’s not a son of Gyles, who had no children; if his house were different, the ward could indeed be considered “not of his blood”. Young Olyvar would be around eighteen or nineteen - old enough to cause trouble if he wanted to assert his Rosby rights.
There’s also the matter of what the Rosby ward does to Falyse Stokeworth:
“Uncomfortable,” complained Falyse. “It rained most of the day. We thought to spend the night at Rosby, but that young ward of Lord Gyles refused us hospitality.” She sniffed. “Mark my word, when Gyles dies that ill-born wretch will make off with his gold.” (“Cersei IV”, A Feast for Crows)
Refusing hospitality to notorious supporters of Cersei and the Lannister regime … sounds like there is some strong anti-Lannister sentiment at Rosby. There’s also a delicious irony, if it is Olyvar there, of refusing hospitality; Olyvar, who probably who have been shocked and appalled at his liege Robb’s murder during a breach of guest right, now refuses hospitality specifically not to be put under the same obligations of guest right to the hated Stokeworths.
So I like to think that Olyvar had perhaps already been fostered at Rosby, due to his family connections; that he was home on a visit at the time of the Catelyn negotiation; and that Walder decided to send his son with Robb to give Olyvar the chance to squire (since he definitely would not with the older, coughing Lord Gyles). The Red Wedding happens, Olyvar is sent back to his old foster home of Rosby not to make trouble, and he’s been watching the KL debacle ever since.
Now, will this come up? I think it will eventually. This is a story that gets planted in AFFC and never really brought up again, and I think that’s deliberate; there will be a reveal at Rosby sometime in TWOW. Whether Olyvar - fourth son of Bethany Rosby (of unexplained familial connection to Rosby) - would be able to assert a right over his elder siblings is unclear; perhaps Olyvar is holding Rosby in trust for his likewise honorable brother Perwyn.
One final note of interest: the maester at Rosby? A bastard son of Walder Frey.
