Compasses align to the magnetic field and can be created with the help of a magnet. There are three types of magnets: naturally occurring, manufactured, and induced

Some naturally occurring compasses are the result of magnetic materials like lodestone while a manufactured compass is when a material suspeptiavke to magnetic fields is magnetized. This can happen by rubbing wool on a thin piece of metal or cooling liquid metal in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The final kind of magnet is an induced magnet like an electromagnet. Electromagnets are the result of running a current through a wire. Moving current generates magnetic field and in then a magnetic field generated current.
