The timer on the oven goes off, startling both of them. He lets go of her ankle and gets up, walking to the kitchen to take the pizza out of the oven. For a moment, Ziva considers leaning over the back of the couch and asking him to finish his sentence.

do you plan to take prompts in 2023: yes! my inbox is always open for any prompts or requests, though i can't promise to be able to fulfill every one

what was the best thing about 2022: personal wise? finding my biological family. fandom wise? busting out stranger things content without ever having seen the show, because that's a trove of comedic potential

any last thoughts for 2022: nothing really specific or eloquent comes to mind, but it wasn't a great year, nor was it a terrible one. i'm excited for 2023!

goals for 2023: i want to finish "might need a break from all the real life" and also in my general life i want to go to college

“Are you ordering me?”

“What part of telling you to hurry up makes you think it is not an order?”

“No,” Cardan says, a ridiculous answer, but when she looks at him, he is shaking his head, “I meant about thanking you. Are you ordering me to do it?”

Summary: She has never been looked at like that before. Like a problem and an answer all at once. Like the physical embodiment of the feeling of hearing your favourite song. Like the axis that the world spins on.

She swipes her hands through the air like she is wiping off a chalkboard, then turns to the sink, looking at herself in the mirror. The dry crust of tomato juice is stuck to her neck, and her hair is hardening into something resembling reddened straw. She looks like a scarecrow, too big clothes and hay for hair. All she needs is a hat with a patch on it.

She turns on the tap, and dips her head, submerging her hair in the water. It softens, and she scrubs at it with lemony smelling hand soap until the water that swirls down the drain is clear again.

She stares at herself in the mirror, then points at her reflection, the tip of her finger pressed against the glass. “You do not fancy James,” she says to herself in a whisper, “you do not fancy him.”

“It’s fine,” Devi says, leaning away from him. She does not want to drop her hand, not yet, but Paxton takes it and turns her arm over, exposing her palm to him.

“You sure?” he asks, tracing one of the lines in her palm. She tries not to sigh, all girly and high in her throat.

“Yeah,” she says, “let’s just go inside. First period is gonna start soon, anyway, so…”

Paxton nods, then lifts her hand, pressing his lips to the center of her palm. “Alright,” he says, and pulls her towards him, draping an arm around her shoulders. “Can't believe you have me going to class on time, Vishwakumar.”

“Honestly?” Devi says. “I can’t believe it either.”

Eddie sighs, and decides that admitting it to Byers is as low risk as it gets. “Right.“

“So, you have to make it winnable.”

“Thank you, William,” Eddie says, crossing his arms over his chest. “It’s truly been a pleasure. Now, get out of my sight.”

She knows what is in his lunchbox, knows that the smoke hanging around him is not like the kind that hangs thick on stages at concerts.

She sees him before she sees the picnic table. He is walking around it, one of his palms over his cheek, pacing back and forth, shoes crunching against the ground like he does not have to worry about what will get on them.

She walks up quietly, trying to skirt into his view so she does not sneak up on him accidentally and scare him. It does not work, though; Eddie turns around and frames her in his line of sight, and then he jumps, making a startled noise that comes from his chest, moving both hands to cover his eyes on the come-down from the scare.

“Jesus, Cunningham,” he says, his voice a little breathy. “You can’t just walk up on a man that carries what I carry.”
