CHAPTER THREE
CHAPTER CW: Purposeful misgendering
Dahliapaw could tell Petuniapaw was hiding something.
Despite the two’s punishment being over for about a moon now, he noticed that they were still leaving camp in the early hours, usually taking a piece of prey or small herb bundle with them. At first they lied and said they were heading to the dirtplace, but eventually they stopped telling the lie and just outright said nothing when they returned in the early hours.
Dahliapaw growled. Leaf-bare had begun just days prior, and according to Blossomstar, it was bound to be a harsh one. Snow was already beginning to cover the ground, and cats huddled in their dens at night to keep warm.
Once again Petuniapaw had left their nest and stalked out of camp, and this time, Dahliapaw followed.
He made sure to stay far enough behind for his scent to be faint, but close enough to see where his sibling was going. He kept his pawsteps light, trying to avoid the usually satisfying crunch of the snow beneath him.
The two walked for a while, and Dahliapaw could feel his paws beginning to grow sore. He didn’t like walking much, and was relieved when Petuniapaw finally made it to their destination. He crouched behind a large rock, resting his front paws on his tail to avoid getting too cold. He was confused when Petuniapaw slipped into a makeshift bush den, and even more confused when he heard voices.
“Thank you again for doing this, Petuniapaw.” The voice was gentle, a hint of a purr in the speaking cat’s tone.
“It’s no problem, Amber.” Petuniapaw purred in reply. They could be heard settling down. “How are the kits?”
Kits? Dahliapaw’s fur bristled, and he held back a growl. Petuniapaw was helping outsiders! Surely this was against the rules!
“They’re fine, sleeping now,” Amber was saying. “It’s about time I gave them names. Would you like to name one, Petuniapaw?”
Dahliapaw heard Petuniapaw gasp. “What? Me? Are you sure…?”
“I’m sure. You’ve helped me so much, without you…I think we wouldn’t be here.” Amber chuckled. “Go on, name whichever one you’d like.”
“They’re both she-cats, correct?”
“Mhm.”
“Okay,” There was a brief silence, and Dahliapaw assumed they were thinking. “I want to name the black one. Maybe…Briar? Her fur is all fluffy, and it looks kinda spiky…”
“Briar is a good choice.” Amber said. “I suppose it’s my turn..I’ll name my other daughter Maple. Her colors…The name fits her.”
“Briar and Maple…Those are good names!” Petuniapaw laughed, and Dahliapaw’s ears pinned against his head.
“They are,” Amber murmured. “I hate to cut our meeting short, but I feel tired…I don’t want you to get caught out here. I think you should head home, for your own good.”
“Okay…Bye, Amber. Bye, kits!” Petuniapaw could be heard standing.
“Goodbye, Petuniapaw.”
Dahliapaw watched as Petuniapaw exited Amber’s den, and when they started to walk home, he followed.
…
“Great StarClan, how much sleep did you two get?”
Dahliapaw sleepily blinked up at Hazelcrest as she spoke. It was the dawn patrol, and he had been sent along with Hazelcrest, Rosewing, Petuniapaw, Lilyeye, and Treewhisker to check the borders.
He hadn’t slept much since returning home. He was too busy thinking about Amber, and how his own littermate was blatantly breaking the warrior code!
He didn’t know what to do, who to tell.
Rosewing puffed out her chest at Hazelcrest’s comment. “They’re growing toms, they must need more rest than us warriors!” She purred.
Lilyeye scoffed. “Petuniapaw isn’t a tom anymore, Rosewing.”
Dahliapaw could see Rosewing’s demeanor shift in an instant, and she gave Lilyeye a glare. “Are you claiming you know my kit better than I do?”
“At this point, Rosewing, maybe I do.”
Rosewing’s claws unsheathed, and she growled, only to be interrupted by Treewhisker’s voice.
“Stop it, you two. You’re acting like a couple of squabbling kits. Look, an EagleClan patrol.” The tom’s voice was soft, yet still stern as he gestured towards the border.
The group of cats stopped to speak with the three EagleClan cats, dipping their heads in greeting.
“Yewsplash! Hello!” Lilyeye exclaimed, stepping forward to touch noses with the calico she-cat.
Yewsplash responded with a purr, nudging her friend. “Good morning, Lilyeye!”
“How’s EagleClan?” Treewhisker asked, stepping forward.
The expressions of the EagleClan cats dropped, and they shuffled their paws awkwardly before one of the warriors, Tansystone, spoke.
“So far…Not well.” He said quietly, his gaze fixed on the ground. “Valleystar’s kits are sick with kittencough, and I’m afraid Gorgefeather isn’t doing too well either.”
“Oh, so sorry to hear that.” Lilyeye murmured, a solemn look crossing her face. “I do hope they recover. If there’s anything we can do, please let us know.”
“Thank you. I knew we could rely on CraneClan.” Yewsplash smiled, before looking down at the smaller she-cat by her side. “Oh! Mistpaw, would you like to say hello to the CraneClan cats?”
Mistpaw, who Dahliapaw noted to be only about seven moons old, shook her head.
“That’s alright.” Yewsplash looked up at the CraneClan patrol. “I apologize, she’s a bit shy…Still getting used to apprentice duties and all.”
“Oh, we completely understand. Our apprentices aren’t talkers either.” Treewhisker chuckled. “Well, we don’t want to keep you long. We’ll be on our way now. Goodbye!”
“Bye, now!” Tansystone meowed, and the two groups remarked their borders before parting ways.
“Sounds like EagleClan is weak,” Dahliapaw said when they were far enough away. “We should invade their camp! Take their herbs, their prey, their-”
“Don’t be mouse-brained, Dahliapaw.” Lilyeye snapped.
Rosewing lashed her tail. “Never speak to my son that way again!”
Hazelcrest groaned. “Save it, both of you. Stars, my head hurts…”
The rest of the patrol was silent, with many unspoken words lingering in the chilly air.
@chrumblr-whumblr day 5: forced to obey
wc: 623 | warnings: threats of gun violence, hostage situation | characters: Rose Oleco (OC) (pov), Dick Grayson, unnamed gangster, Jason Todd (barely)
Rose belongs to my sister! as always if you want to know Moar about my silly things just ask please ask. PLEASE ask. THEY ARE SO CUTE HELP. 🥺
—
Rose stumbled as she landed, leaning on a nearby wall to regain her footing before looking around and behind for her boyfriend. “Nightwing?” “I’m good. Just… go.” His voice was choked even over the comms, and she felt her chest clench in fear. “What? Where are you?”
“Right behind you, Shadow.” She whirled around, hands raised, to see one of the gangsters they’d defeated earlier gripping Dick by the shoulder, a gun to his head. Rose tried to ignore the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. “Let him go.” “No. First, you’re gonna do something for me.” The guy shook him roughly, and she spotted the slightest twitch in Dick’s jaw as he shoved him back. “You’re gonna get over here and put these meta-cuffs on yourself, and then I’ll see about letting your little boytoy go.” “Many honourable men are little boytoys,” Dick sniffed, and Rose desperately wanted to grab him by the shoulders and say Not now, Richard. But she couldn’t, and prepared to form a portal under them instead-
“And before you think about making any of your sparkly black holes, just know that birdie here ain’t likely to survive a bullet to the brain. And you ain’t likely to be faster than one neither.” He pressed the pistol tighter to Dick’s head. “At least use proper English while threatening Nightwing,” Rose said through gritted teeth. “It’s either.” Dick raised an eyebrow slightly, and she returned an almost imperceptible shrug, trying to tamp down her bubbling panic. I don’t have a strategy for this, darling. Not like you would. Her mind raced as she tried to think of something, anything, but every plan she came up ended in blood spatters and pain.
“Get over here, girl.” The gangster scowled, shifted impatiently. His finger twitched on the trigger, and Rose flinched. “All right, all right.” She stepped forward slowly, bent to pick up the cuffs and put them on, took another step closer. Tried to avoid Dick’s wide, panicked eyes. Sorry, Blue.
One more step, and he was within reach. The barrel of the gun turned to point at her instead of him, and he turned to look at Rose in dismay. “It’s okay. Just return to base,” she tried to comfort him. “Not without you.” He reached for his escrima, stopped short when the man snarled a warning. “Easy now. We wouldn’t want anything to happen to her, now would we?”
He was angry, she could tell that much. Angry at the guy for dangling their safety in front of each other like a carrot on a stick, and frustrated that she was now in the hands of a criminal, powers dampened and gun to her head. But he met her eyes and flicked his gaze quickly downwards and back, and she trusted him.
Raising one boot, Rose stomped down hard on the guy’s foot, and he cursed, staggering to the side. She saw Dick tense as his gun hand quivered, then there was a loud BANG, and she squeezed her eyes shut. When she opened them, the guy was on the ground, Jason was standing over him with one pistol smoking, and Dick was running to pull her into his arms.
“Are you okay?” he whispered. “Are you?” she shot back, frantically looking him up and down for injuries. “How did he even catch you? For a second I thought…” “I’m fine,” he reassured her as he unlocked the cuffs and let them drop. Then he pulled her in again and buried his face in her hair. “I’m just glad you are, too.”
She pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, ignoring Jason’s exaggerated gagging, and pulled away to look him in the eye. “Let’s go home.”
“Oh hell no Mr Player…I know how you go through girlfriends…”
“…I will NOT let you break my little sister’s heart too!!!”

Rosewing (a tired but content background character) and Oddity (a loner who has "much ado" and is very dedicated to the mission some starry cats gave her)
I forgot to mention that both Rosewing and Oddity are female lol
———————————————————————
Rosewing - A kind and introverted she-cat. Rosewing is happy with where she is, sure, life can be repetitive, especially in peaceful times, but it’s a good life to live. Rosewing will always put others before herself, always volunteering to help others, and many cats note her as being very polite and reserved, despite Rosewing’s helpful nature, she is certainly no extrovert, often not speaking unless needed, but it’s not out of unfriendliness, she just doesn’t feel like she has anything worth saying, 14/10
Oddity - A determined and thoughtful she-cat. Oddity can often get lost in thought, once she starts fixating on one tiny little thing, it can open up her thoughts to a whole load of different topics. Oddity doesn’t care what other cats think of her so she will often do things she enjoys that other loners might scoff at such as chasing butterflies or playing with feathers, she doesn’t see a reason to not do these things that she’s always enjoyed. Once Oddity has made her mind up about something, there’s no stopping her, a small part of her things that these starry cats are just her imagination, but she knows in her heart that they are real, and she will not rest until the quest they sent her on is completed, 15/10
Rosekit is small but ready to take on the world!
