February 27th is the day of Shinsengumi in Japan,which is to commemorate the establishment of the Roshigumi,the predecessor of the Shinsengumi,on that day in 1863.

It's interesting that this anniversary seems to be based on misinformation:It is recorded in the National History Dictionary that "the Roshigumi who stayed in Kyoto accepted the supervision of Matsudaira Katamori,the Kyoto Shugoshoku,on February 27, 1863.",but it's not ture.Katamori actually took the Mibu Roshigumi,a group that splintered from the Roshigumi as the direct predecessor of the Shinsengumi,under his command on March 12th,and the group was appointed Shinsengumi in recognition of its security work during the August 18th coup.

The men had had an early start; the chill from that damp winter morning seemed to cling to them since they’d gathered and went ahead of Shogun Iemochi’s procession. Upon leaving Nihonbashi, they followed the river to the East Sea Road and then traveled the route West to the Capital. 

The Imperial Court had been insistent on seeing the Shogun, and considering Japan’s fragile state of affairs at that time, both within and outside the nation, Shogun Iemochi was indeed under some great political strain. 

Matsudaira Shungaku had approached the Shieikan, the Tennen Rishin Ryu dojo in Ichigaya, with the task of leading the shogun’s parade of some three thousand men through the Tokaido route to Kyoto. Kondo, who’d long since been itching for battle, was the first to offer his services and was followed by seven others of the same school; Hijikata Toshizo, Okita Soji, Inoue Genzaburo, Yamanami Keisuke, Nagakura Shinpachi, Harada Sanosuke, and Todo Heisuke.

They would arrive in Kyoto on February 23rd, 1863.

Just finished rewatching the Hakuouki Reimeiroku anime, and the ending always makes me sad. 🥺 I seriously loved Ibuki's relationship with everybody. They didn't even get to say goodbye.

02/04 Roshigumi applicants (about 230 people) gathered at the Denzuin Daishin Dormitory in Edo Koishikawa.

02/05 The formation of the corps for the Roshigumi’s journey to Kyoto is announced. Participants were divided into 1st to 7th divisions, and each was further divided into 3 divisions.

02/08 (Day 1 of the journey) Roshigumi departs from Edo Koishikawa Denzuin. On the way, they stopped by Udono Kyuo's house, which is handled by Ronin, and joined Udono. On this day, they stayed overnight at Warabi.

02/10 (Day 3) Arrived at an inn in Honjo, but Kondo Isami, who is the first to arrive, forgot to arrange an inn for Serizawa's group. Serizawa, who was furious, set out a bonfire all over the road of the post station, saying, "I'll sleep outdoors." Kondo and his colleagues hurriedly arranged an inn and guided the Serizawa group to soothe the angry Serizawa. Serizawa, who didn't like the fact that "third squad" was written on the nameplate of the inn, scraped the nameplate with a knife so that it could be read as "first squad." This is an episode that shows Serizawa's temperament that he must be the best in everything.

02/17 (Day 10) Stay in an inn at Nakatsugawa. On this day, Serizawa was dismissed from the third squad, and Nishi Kyosuke took over. Furthermore, Nishi's group will be replaced with the sixth squad Ishizaka Sojun.

It is said that the reason why the Nishi's thrid squad was replaced with Ishizaka's sixth squad was to separate the Serizawa and Kondo groups who caused problems. When Serizawa was dismissed as the third squad captain, Kondo acted as the third squad captain for about a day, but soon returned to arranging accomodations.

02/19 (Day 12) One night at Kano. On the 17th, Serizawa, who was dismissed as the captain of the 3rd squad, became a commander of the Roshigumi. Serizawa, who has a lot of problematic behavior, was ordered to serve as a commander as a measure to "keep an eye on him"

02/21 (Day 14) Stay in an inn at Musa. On this day, which is 10 ri to Kyoto, everyone is served sake to celebrate the success of the long journey.

02/23 (Day 16) Departed Otsu at dawn and finally arrive in Kyoto

Umaonsuke went to Kyoto in 1863 as part of the Roshigumi. However, when it became apparent that the group's purpose was being steered in a direction other than what had originally been promised - a split that later led to the formation of the Shinsengumi under Serizawa Kamo and Kondo Isami - Umanosuke opted to return to Edo.

Back in Edo, he joined the Shinchogumi, the Shinsengumi's counterpart in the shogun's capital. However, he eventually became disillusioned with serving the bakufu and joined the anti-bakufu forces, likely in 1867.

He held a license in the Hokushin Itto-ryu style and died in 1868 of tuberculosis at age 30.
