I Am Vengeance (2018)

Plot:  When ex-soldier turned mercenary, John Gold, learns of the murder of his best friend, he sets off on a mission to find out what happened. What he discovers is a sinister conspiracy and he sets about taking down those responsible one by one.

Running Time: 92 Minutes

Why I Watched It: Mostly cause it’s an action film but also it got a sequel so it had that going for it.

Random Thoughts: So IMDB says the original title was plain old Vengeance, kind of better I would have liked I’m Vengeance.

So Stu Bennett was/is a wrestler and he wrestled under the name Wade Barrett and did some acting under that name as well.  He’s reason I kind of waited to watch this film, I like him but I wasn’t sure he could carry a film and I should also point out this is a British action film, not that it’s a bad thing it just means it’s different than a Hollywood action film, and also it’s a very B-Movie which is always a good thing in my books.  Also with the sequel it looks like they’re trying to build a franchise out of Bennett’s character.

What I Liked: Not going to lie I went in not excepting much, heck I didn’t even know Gary Daniels was in the film as the lead villain.  I was kind of shocked I liked it, it’s pretty good.  The set up and just about everything here is text book, action cliches 101 but it’s done pretty  well, I do think it helps Bennett hasn’t been the lead good guy much and he plays it like he has something to prove.  I think it was smart to have him as a quiet but lethal guy, he’s pretty controlled and the main think is he can    pull off the action and he has the size and look to pull off being a bad ass.

The film is simple in set up and plot and it hits all the beats, it gives us a gang of bad guys who are very bad and evil which is led by action vet Gary Daniels, who by the way is good here, he’s older but he’s still bad ass.  They give or lead a side kick type character who is funny and they give him a love interest who's nice, what else is there to ask for.  Oh yeah he’s out for revenge.

The action is pretty good, there’s a couple of really good fist fights, the finale with Bennett and Daniels is very good and I like they went intense instead of flashy.  It’s a gritty action film not slick at all.

It’s well directed and paces very well, for what it was it was gone well.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s low budget and it shows sometimes, who can tell it was a quick shot, some more time would have been nice, not a huge complaint but with a movie like this there were times where it’s budget was showing.

I like Keith Allen and he’s good here but he’s barely in it and you wonder what the point was, cause he’s in flash backs and really just a couple of scenes, if you took them out the film stays the same but it was good to see him nonetheless.

I liked it but let’s be clear this was a standard revenge movie, didn’t break new ground and yes it does rely on cliches a lot.

Final Thoughts: Bottom line is I enjoyed it, solid action film.  I will watch the sequel.
