biased commentary. wade barrett.
wade barrett x wrestler!reader
synopsis: you were supposed to be wwe’s newest star in the women’s division, athletic, commanding, and a natural crowd favorite. but the moment you debuted, wade barrett made you his personal target from the commentary desk. every match, every promo, he picked you apart with that smug british wit of his, and the fans ate it up.
on-screen, it was all heat, your sharp clapbacks, his ruthless critiques, but backstage, the sparks burned hotter than either of you would admit. the tension between you and Wade was supposed to be kayfabe, but soon enough the lines blurred. every sarcastic quip felt too sharp, every stare lasted too long, and fans started noticing.
was it real hate, or was it something else entirely?

your entrance music blasted through the speakers, and the entire arena seemed to come alive. the titantron lit up with your name, flashes of red and gold, and the crowd roared as if they’d been waiting for you all night. you stepped through the curtain with your head held high, every muscle tight with adrenaline, the heat of the lights immediately settling on your skin.
the chants started almost instantly, your name rolling across sections of the arena, building in strength as you made your way down the ramp. it was deafening, dizzying, and intoxicating all at once. you let your hand brush the outstretched palms reaching over the barricade, soaking in the moment.
michael cole’s voice rang out from commentary, his tone full of excitement.
"what a reaction! this is one of the most anticipated debuts we’ve seen in a long time. listen to this place!”
And then Wade Barrett’s voice cut through the electricity like a blade.
"anticipated? please. i’ve seen plenty of so-called ‘phenoms’ come and go, cole. flashy entrance, shiny gear, a couple of instagram followers, and suddenly everyone thinks they’re the next big thing. let’s see if she can actually wrestle."
the sneer in his tone carried, dripping with disdain. you felt it in your stomach, but you pushed it down. not now.
sliding into the ring, you rose to your feet and turned slowly, letting your gaze sweep across the sea of faces. the crowd got louder, feeding off your energy. you climbed the turnbuckle, raising an arm with defiance, and their cheers rattled the rafters.
the bell rang, sharp and commanding. chelsea green charged, and the match was on.
the rhythm came to you like instinct: ducking under a clothesline, bouncing off the ropes, landing a shoulder tackle that sent your opponent sprawling. every move you executed was crisp, sharp, the kind of performance you’d drilled a thousand times but never under this much pressure. and yet, you thrived in it.
the crowd responded to everything, cheering when you hit a clean dropkick, groaning when your opponent landed a stiff forearm to your jaw. the arena was alive, and it was for you.
wade’s voice followed you through the action like an unwanted shadow.
"see? sloppy footwork already. she’s rushing. That’s the problem with rookies, they’re so desperate to impress, they forget the fundamentals."
michael chuckled beside him. "bit harsh, y/n has been wrestling for over ten years"
"harsh? no. honest. you can dress it up however you want, but one flashy debut doesn’t make a career. i’ll believe it when i see consistency."
you gritted your teeth, blocking it out as you hit a snap suplex that sent chelsea crashing to the mat. the fans erupted again. you climbed the ropes, took a breath, and launched into your signature move, a diving elbow that landed squarely across your opponent’s chest. the impact jolted through your body, but you hooked the leg.
one.
two.
three.
the bell rang again, the referee raising your arm in victory. the noise from the crowd hit a fever pitch, echoing in your chest like a second heartbeat. you were sweating, panting, but smiling too, unable to stop yourself. you’d done it. your debut was everything you’d dreamed of.
"one win doesn’t make a champion. wwe doesn’t need another shiny new toy that breaks after the wrapping comes off."
you climbed the ropes one more time, raising your arm, soaking in the defiance of it. the spotlight hit your face, sweat gleaming, adrenaline buzzing in your veins. if wade barrett wanted to bury you, let him. the fans were yours.
still, as you hopped down and glanced toward the commentary desk, your eyes found his. for a half-second, in the middle of the sneer he wore like armor, you saw it, the flicker of something softer. pride, amusement, maybe even something protective. it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by that cold smirk that made the crowd jeer.
no one else would notice.
but you did.
and it left your stomach twisted in ways that had nothing to do with nerves.

written: not bad for my first week on the job, can't wait to be wwe's shiny new toy for a very long time
the moment you stepped through the curtain, the roar of the arena faded into the low hum of the backstage world, road cases rolling, crew members shouting cues, the distant thrum of entrance music for the next segment. tou were still buzzing, sweat clinging to your skin, chest rising and falling as the adrenaline refused to let you come down.
you barely made it ten steps before you heard him.
"not bad for a shiny new toy."
the voice was lower now, quieter, stripped of the smug bravado he wore on commentary. you turned your head, and there he was, leaning casually against a stack of crates just out of sight of the main hallway. he still had his headset around his neck, the collar of his suit jacket slightly loosened, like he’d stepped away from the desk just long enough to find you.
you narrowed your eyes, though the corner of your mouth betrayed you with a twitch of a smile. "you really had to call me that on live tv?"
wade’s lips curved into a slow grin. "what can i say? it’s my job to ruffle feathers. and you looked good with yours ruffled." his accent wrapped around the words in that deep, teasing rumble that always made it harder to stay annoyed.
you shook your head, wiping a bead of sweat from your temple with the back of your hand. "you could’ve just said ‘congratulations,’ you know. like a normal human being."
"where’s the fun in that?" he pushed off the crates and closed the distance between you in a few measured strides. his height forced you to tilt your head back, and for a second, the noise of the backstage world seemed to dim. "for what it’s worth you were bloody brilliant out there."
your chest tightened, the sincerity in his eyes knocking the wind from your lungs more than the match had. he wasn’t wade barrett, the smug commentator, not here. he was just wade, warm, proud, and looking at you like you’d just set the world on fire.
you let out a quiet laugh, shaking your head. "you’re impossible."
"and yet" he murmured, leaning down just enough that his voice was for you alone, "you can’t stay away."
before you could retort, footsteps echoed down the hall. a producer hurried past, clipboard in hand, barely glancing at the two of you. wade stepped back instantly, slipping his hands into his pockets, posture straightening back into casual indifference.
you adjusted your wrist tape, forcing yourself to look just as nonchalant, even though your pulse was hammering.
as the producer disappeared, wade’s eyes flicked back to yours, one brow arched. "see you later?"
you bit your lip, nodding before you could think twice. "yeah. usual spot."
and just like that, he turned and strolled back toward the desk, shoulders squared, slipping seamlessly into the role of the smug, detached commentator again. to anyone else, nothing had happened.
but your heart was still racing, proof enough that everything had.

the lights blazed hot on your skin as you stood in the ring, your entrance music fading beneath the roar of the crowd. another friday night, another chance to prove yourself. you bounced lightly on your heels, shaking out your arms, eyes locked on your opponent across the canvas.
the bell rang.
you exploded out of your corner, ducking under a lock-up attempt and catching your opponent in a quick wrist lock. the fans cheered at the slick counter, your momentum carrying you forward. you moved sharper, faster, more confident than your debut. every strike landed with precision; every suplex cracked the mat loud enough to make the front rows wince.
but above the crowd, his voice followed you like a shadow.
"she’s arrogant. look at her smirking already, cole. she thinks she’s got the division wrapped around her finger. too concerned with showing off instead of learning respect. it’s only a matter of time before someone humbles her."
you didn’t look at the desk. you couldn’t. not when your blood boiled hotter every time he opened his mouth.
the match wore on. you absorbed punishment, hard elbows to the jaw, a backbreaker that left your spine screaming, but the crowd never wavered. they clapped, stomped, rallied behind you. their energy filled your veins like fire, pushing you to your feet again and again.
and when the opening came, you took it. a spinning kick dropped your opponent. a quick climb to the ropes, a leap through the air, and your finisher connected flush. the crowd exploded as the referee’s hand smacked the mat.
one. two. three.
the bell rang, your music hit, and you sat up on your knees, chest heaving as the referee lifted your arm. you grinned despite the ache in your ribs. another win. another step forward.
but wade’s voice cut sharp through the ovation.
"congratulations, she can win another meaningless match. that doesn’t change the fact that she’s an entitled newbie who hasn’t earned the hype. trust me, she’ll come crashing back down to earth sooner rather than later."
boos rippled from the crowd. you leaned against the ropes, sweat dripping down your face, jaw tightening as his words echoed. something in you snapped.
you held up a hand for a mic. the referee fetched one, and the crowd grew louder with anticipation. you wiped your mouth, then turned to the commentary desk, eyes narrowing straight at him.
"entitled? arrogant?" your voice cracked like a whip, hot and sharp. "you’ve got a lot to say for someone hiding behind a desk, wade."
the crowd roared. you pressed forward, gripping the top rope as you leaned toward him.
"if you’re that desperate to tear me down, maybe you should do it face to face. step between these ropes again and find out just how ‘shiny’ this toy really is."
the fans erupted, chanting your name so loud the ring shook with it. cameras caught wade’s reaction, arms folded, lips curled in that trademark sneer. but his eyes, just for a split second, gave something away. something only you recognized.
you dropped the mic, letting it thud to the mat, your music blasting again as you climbed the turnbuckle, soaking in the ovation. on-screen, it looked like pure venom between you and wade barrett.
off-screen, you knew it was the kind of spark that couldn’t be buried.

user8: y/n vs wade barrett when?
the adrenaline hadn’t worn off yet when you left the locker room. crew members rushed past with headsets and clipboards, lights flickered against the concrete walls, and the faint echo of the crowd still bled through from the arena. you were still clutching your water bottle, trying to breathe evenly, when you saw him.
wade was waiting.
he leaned against the wall near catering, suit jacket sharp under the fluorescent lights, his expression was the same one you’d seen from the ring, smug, lips tugged into that infuriating little smirk.
"cute promo" he said, voice low and unhurried, thick with that rolling british accent. "challenging me like that. you realize i’d wipe the floor with you, don’t you?"
you scoffed, uncapping your water bottle and taking a long drink. "please. you wouldn’t last five minutes with me."
that earned you a laugh, an honest one, deep and warm, so unlike the mocking tone he used on commentary. it startled you for a moment, seeing him like this: less larger-than-life heel, more man.
he stepped closer, slow enough that you could’ve walked away if you wanted. but you didn’t.
"arrogant", he teased, his eyes sweeping over your flushed face, your damp hair sticking to your temple. his hand brushed yours, feather-light, as though testing if you’d pull back. you didn’t. instead, you tilted your chin up, daring him to keep going.
"you started it" you murmured, voice softer than you meant it to be.
his smirk shifted into something else then, smaller, more private. "you were perfect tonight" he said, voice barely above a whisper. "and i don’t mean that as commentary. i mean it as me."
the words settled between you, heavy and warm. your chest tightened, not from the match, but from the way he looked at you, like you were the only person in the hallway, maybe in the whole world.
for a moment, the chaos of wwe blurred away. there was just wade, tall and steady, his cologne clinging to the air, his fingers brushing yours again with more certainty this time.
someone’s laughter echoed from down the hall, snapping the moment back into reality. wade straightened, his hand retreating, but his eyes lingered on yours just a beat longer than they should have.
he smirked again, softer now. "careful, love. keep talking like that on tv, and people might start thinking you actually like me."
you swallowed, a smile tugging at your lips despite yourself. "maybe i do."
and before you could lose your nerve, you walked away first, leaving him watching after you with something that looked suspiciously like a grin.

the match was over, the sting of sweat in your eyes mixing with the burn in your lungs as your theme thundered through the arena. you had just pulled out the kind of win that proved, without question, you weren’t just a flash in the pan. the crowd was chanting your name so loud the vibrations rattled the ropes beneath your hands.
but you barely heard it.
because above the roar of the fans, you could hear him.
"another fluke. she’s reckless, she’s sloppy, and one of these days, someone’s going to expose her for the overhyped rookie she is. mark my words, michael."
the boos rained down instantly. not at you, at him.
you stood in the centre of the ring, chest heaving, and something inside you snapped. months of insults, two weeks of being belittled, two weeks of holding back when every muscle in your body begged you to fight. enough.
you rolled out of the ring and marched toward the commentary desk. the crowd rose to their feet, anticipation crackling like static in the air.
michael cole’s eyes went wide as you slammed your hands onto the desk so hard the monitors rattled. wade barely flinched. he rose from his chair, towering over you, his face carved into that trademark sneer that made millions of fans love to hate him.
"say it to my face" you spat, eyes locked on his.
the fans erupted.
wade leaned down until you were nose to nose, his voice dripping venom. "you want me to say it? fine. you don’t belong here. you’re nothing but hype and ego wrapped up in a shiny little package. and sooner or later, someone’s going to tear that package apart.”
the crowd booed so loud it drowned out cole’s protests. your jaw tightened. you were close enough to feel the warmth of his breath, close enough to swing, close enough to kiss.
a smirk tugged at your lips.
you tilted your head, let the tension linger, let every single person in the arena hang on the moment. then you straightened, dropped the mic onto the desk with a hollow thud, and turned your back on him.
the crowd went insane. half of them cheered for your defiance, half of them screamed like they’d just watched the opening move of a fight or the start of something else entirely. phones lit up the arena as fans tried to capture every angle.
behind you, wade was still standing, arms folded across his chest, smirk firmly in place. but his eyes followed you all the way up the ramp. cameras caught it, the split-second flicker of something softer beneath the sneer.
and the internet would not stop replaying it for days.

"care to explain what the hell that was?"
wade.
he stood there in his suit, headset gone, arms folded over his chest in a way that made him look ten feet tall. his brow was furrowed, his jaw set tight, but his eyes weren’t angry. they were alive, sharp, still glowing from the moment you’d dared to get in his face.
you tossed the towel over your shoulder. "what, you didn’t like me shutting you up in front of millions of people?"
his lips twitched. not quite a smile. not quite a scowl. "you nearly broke the internet" he said, his voice low, careful, like he was trying not to laugh. "they’ll be talking about that for weeks."
"good." you stepped closer, tilting your chin up. "maybe now they’ll stop thinking i'm just some ‘shiny toy.’"
for a beat, the hallway was silent except for the hum of distant equipment. then wade let out a slow breath, and the hardness in his posture eased. he reached up, almost hesitantly, and brushed his thumb along your jaw.
"no one thinks that anymore" he murmured. "not after what you’ve done. not after tonight. you’ve already proven yourself, to everyone. to me."
the words knocked the air out of you harder than any bump in the ring. this wasn’t the wade barrett who tore you apart on commentary. this wasn’t the smug heel the fans loved to hate. this was wade, just wade, looking at you like you were the only thing in the world that mattered.
your chest tightened. you leaned into his touch without even thinking. his hand slid to the back of your neck, steady, warm.
"you can’t say things like that to me right now" you whispered, your voice trembling just enough to give you away.
"why not?" he asked, lips curving into a softer smile than you’d ever seen from him. "it’s the truth."
someone passed by down the hall, but neither of you moved. the buzz of conversation from catering drifted closer, but still, neither of you cared.
wade’s forehead rested against yours for just a heartbeat, long enough for your pulse to trip over itself, long enough to know this was no longer a game you were sneaking around with. this was real.
when he pulled back, his eyes lingered on you like a secret only the two of you shared.
"careful, love" he said, that sly smirk creeping back into place. "can't have people knowing we actually like each other"
you couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out of you, small and helpless.
and before the blush had even left your cheeks, you turned and walked away first, leaving him standing there, grinning like a man who knew he was in trouble.

the arena lights burned hot, and the noise was deafening as you stared across the ring at nia jax. she cracked her neck, rolled her shoulders, and smirked like she already knew she’d flatten you. the crowd roared in anticipation, they loved an underdog fight, and tonight, you were their warrior.
the bell rang.
the match was brutal from the start. nia’s power was overwhelming, every slam rattled your bones, every chop to your chest echoed like a gunshot. you rallied with speed, ducking and weaving, chopping her down with kicks to the legs, peppering her with strikes. the fans were behind you, chanting your name as you climbed the ropes, adrenaline pumping.
but then it happened.
you leapt, aiming for your signature top-rope move and nia caught you midair like a ragdoll. the crowd gasped. she twisted, slamming you down hard, your shoulder hitting the mat at an angle it wasn’t meant to. pain exploded white-hot, blinding, stealing the air from your lungs.
you clutched your arm instinctively, body curling around it. the referee dropped to his knees instantly, checking you, while nia stood over you, smirk faltering as she realized something had gone wrong.
the crowd fell into an uneasy silence. then, the dreaded signal: the referee threw up the X.
michael was the first to realise something was really wrong, "ladies and gentlemen, i don’t think this is part of the match."
then wade's voice piped up, shaky, not his character at all, "bloody hell, she’s hurt. somebody get the medics out here now!"
the headset crackled as he yanked it off, his voice raw and real. the fans nearest the desk started screaming louder as Wade abandoned his chair and sprinted to the ring.
you blinked through the haze of pain as he slid under the ropes, dropping to his knees at your side. his hand hovered, terrified to touch you, but desperate to be close.
"hey, hey, look at me" he urged, his accent rougher now without the polish of commentary. he used your real name, not your ring name, and the crowd gasped at the slip. "stay still, love. just breathe. trainers are on their way."
the medics rushed in, pushing wade back, but he didn’t leave. he crouched just beside them, one big hand finding yours, gripping it tight as the doctor assessed your shoulder. you tried to keep your face neutral for the cameras, but a whimper slipped out, and wade’s jaw clenched, fury and fear battling across his features.
michael cole’s voice filled the silence, strained:
"folks, this is not what we want to see. y/n is hurt, and wade barrett is clearly concerned here."
the medics carefully immobilized your arm, easing you onto a stretcher. you felt the tears prick at your eyes, not just from the pain, but from the way wade refused to let go of your hand until the very last second, trainers practically forcing him to step back.
as they wheeled you up the ramp, you turned your head just enough to catch a glimpse of him, still standing in the ring, chest heaving, his eyes locked on you like the rest of the world had disappeared.
the cameras caught every second.
the fans would never forget it.

the world was a blur of fluorescent lights and muffled noise as the medics wheeled you through the curtain. your shoulder was braced, pain still pulsing in waves, but your mind wasn’t on the injury. it was on the man who never left your side in the ring.
wade barrett pushed through the cluster of trainers, officials, and wrestlers waiting in the hallway. he didn’t care about the eyes on him, didn’t care that every second he stayed glued to you was another nail in the coffin of keeping this relationship quiet.
he was at your side before the stretcher even stopped moving.
"i’m here, love" he murmured, slipping into the chair beside the trainer’s table as they carefully transferred you. his hand found yours again, big and warm, squeezing tight like he could anchor you in place. "i’m not going anywhere."
the trainer started his work, palpating your shoulder, asking about pain, explaining the dislocation. you tried to listen, but your focus kept darting to wade. his suit jacket was discarded, his tie loosened, his forehead damp with sweat like he had gone to war instead of you.
"you scared the bloody life out of me" he said once the trainer stepped away to grab supplies. his voice was low, meant just for you, but you knew everyone nearby could hear it. "seeing you go down like that, i've never felt anything like it."
your lips curved into a weak smile. "guess i'm full of surprises."
he shook his head, exhaling sharply, then leaned closer. "no more jokes. don’t downplay it. i don’t care what anyone thinks anymore, i love you, and i can’t sit behind a desk while you’re hurt. i won’t."
the words hit harder than any slam in the ring. your throat tightened, eyes stinging as his thumb brushed gently over the back of your hand. around you, people exchanged looks, a mix of shock, knowing, and quiet acceptance. the secret was out.
you swallowed hard, whispering, "i love you too."
wade’s face softened, his usual smirk nowhere in sight. just raw relief. he leaned in and pressed a kiss to your temple, careful not to jostle you, lingering just long enough that the room seemed to still around you.
when he pulled back, the trainer returned with a sling, rattling off instructions about rest and scans. wade didn’t let go of your hand once.
by the time they prepped you for transport to the hospital, half the locker room knew, and the cameras had already leaked the story to the outside world. but for the first time, you didn’t care.
because wade barrett was still right there, holding on like he’d never let you go.

THREE MONTHS LATER
the curtain was heavier than you remembered. maybe it was the adrenaline buzzing in your veins, maybe it was the three months you’d spent rehabbing, questioning whether you’d even get this moment again.
but when your music hit, the weight lifted.
the crowd erupted, the sound crashing into you like a wave. the pyro went off, lights dancing across the arena, and suddenly you weren’t the girl who had been stretchered out months ago. you were a fighter. a survivor. a star.
you stepped out onto the stage, your gear gleaming under the lights, every step deliberate. your heart hammered in your chest as the crowd’s chant swelled, thousands of voices screaming your name. You lifted your good arm high, grinning through the nerves, and the reaction grew even louder.
and then you looked toward commentary.
wade barrett was on his feet.
he wasn’t leaning back in his chair, smirking at cole’s lines, or delivering one of his cutting one-liners. he wasn’t the smug heel who had once dismissed you as reckless and sloppy. he wasn’t in character at all.
he was just wade.
headset dropped to hang around his neck, suit jacket already tossed aside, he clapped like the proudest man in the building. his smile was unguarded, wide, genuine, so bright it softened every rough edge of his face. for once, the camera didn’t try to cut away. they lingered on him, catching the way his eyes never left you.
michael clocked this immediately, "well, i think it’s safe to say Wade Barrett is proud to see y/n back in wwe"
the words barely scratched the surface.
you climbed onto the apron, your boots steady, your body strong. when you stepped through the ropes, your gaze found him again. the crowd was deafening, but for a moment, it was just the two of you. his lips moved, subtle, almost hidden, but you caught it.
i love you.
your chest tightened. months of pain, doubt, secrecy, and recovery boiled down to this second: wade barrett standing in front of the world, not as a commentator or a character, but as your man. and for the first time, he wasn’t hiding it.
the bell rang for your comeback match, but it felt like the result didn’t matter. you’d already won.
because wade barrett had finally dropped every mask, and in front of millions, he chose to be yours.
