Missed Hank McCoy a few days ago so I decided to take it upon myself to read as many of his major appearances/solo appearances as possible, only to discover I have read all of his most prominent appearances, with the only exceptions being O5 flashback material because frankly O5 Hank is kind of sauceless and I don't really care. With Hank, who has been in so many comics over the years, so many major appearances across multiple different runs and areas of the Marvel Universe, it's easy to feel like you're missing out on so much, so it was funny to me to suddenly realise, oh no, I do in fact know this man as much as I think I do, and I don't just have Hank McCoy related delusions of grandeur.

This does mean, of course, if I miss Hank and want to read comics I haven't read yet, my options are either O5 Flashback material, 90s X-Men, or the 2000s Fraction/Utopia stuff, and frankly none of those fill me with joy, but such is life of the Hank McCoy head.

was articulating this in discord earlier but as im playing aa2, i really like that a function of phoenix as a protagonist is that he tries really really really hard to not think or talk about the things he cares about the most. he is trying to convince the player/himself that he is just a normal blank slate protag without anything much going on in there.

in aa1 it takes ages to learn why phoenix became a lawyer and it has to be pried out of him bit by bit that he knew edgeworth prior to the events of the game and that saving edgeworth was the entire reason he became a lawyer

in aa2 we're getting a similar thing of phoenix concealing from the player was has happened to edgeworth in the events between aa1 and aa2.

but what i think continues to go unsaid and continues to be buried is how much mia's death affected him and how much he's refusing to unpack that. phoenix visits kurain for the first time and despite mia being an obvious absence there(a lot of attention being put on Maya being the last of her bloodline), phoenix refuses to engage with it. mia's name doesn't come up once the entire time he's in kurain.

so its fun that we have this sort of way of telling what phoenix cares about most via looking at the negative space in his narration. he doesnt talk about edgeworth. he doesnt talk about mia. when maya is away training and he misses her badly, he doesnt talk about her or think about her.
