these spiders are my only friends
Bit of something different
So, as is probably apparent, there is something deeply wrong with me, especially in terms of fighting games, which has led to random searches across the web for every project I can find, finished or not. About a year or two ago I managed to find one but forgot the name of it until now after desperately searching over and over again.
This is Rotten Core
As a fan of dark, gritty, bizarre artstyles, Rotten Core has a tone that has stuck with me ever since. It's the kind of style I feel like I don't get to see often in media, especially nowadays (though don't get me wrong, there are still some amazing examples out there today). Pretty much every part of this project appeals to me, aesthetically and mechanically, and that's not even getting into the actual lore of it, where the characters are finding inhuman grey organs on the streets and eating them to gain superpowers (at the cost of their sanity).
And oh my god the characters, they just fucking OOZE with personality
Including my personal favorite, Embargo (they really locked one of the best character concepts i've ever seen behind a stretch goal, tragic)
And the art oh my god the art the art the art I love the art so goddamn much
Unfortunately, if you clicked the link earlier, you'll see that the project was cancelled, only managing to reach 2% of its funding and its Instagram account has long since stopped posting, leaving it a shining, filth covered diamond left in the rough, never given the chance to become something great......
Or at least that's what I thought, until I tried looking it up again
Apparently, the Twitter account for Rotten Core was hacked a couple years ago and they only recently got it appealed, and they seem to still be doing some work for the game, even now. That image I showed earlier of L.S.D (the guy in the straight jacket)? That was posted September 2024, and they seem to have some plans to keep pursuing the project and give updates. This is still something that has a chance to be great, to stand out, to release and have a dedicated, if small community, sticking with something truly unique.
Rotten Core is not perfect, I mean, their original IndieGoGo page had GGPO netcode as a stretch goal, so even if they release, i'm not fully confident that it would be so easily accessible if you're not somebody who loves grinding out singleplayer fighting game modes or has friends to play it with locally. However, I think Rotten Core really has something special, and I hope I can at least convince one other person of it.
everything rotten, everything gone.
