It’s always inspiring to see local artists come together to produce music that transcends cities and delivers blissful grooves to listeners across coasts. DC-based rapper GoldLink captures the damages personal relationships suffer when achieving such success as he raps about missed chances at love over a slick, soulful blend of synths and delicately-placed tambourine jangles on “Rough Soul,” a glossy track featuring vocals from April George of MD-based duo, April + VISTA.

Much like Drake or J. Cole, GoldLink has a tendency to embed his emotions deeply into his music, a trend made clear through his thoughtful lyricism. The 23-year-old rapper digs beyond the superficial to produce mature, authentic raps. Clearly, this trend has proved to be successful, as he has quickly risen beyond other Soundcloud emcees into the mainstream, collaborating with other established artists such as Anderson .Paak in the past year.

As April George guides the song’s melody, ordering her ex-lover to sever ties in each chorus, it becomes clear that “Rough Soul,” unlike other popular rap songs about stressful relationships, is an assertion of independence instead of heartbreak. Rather than lamenting that his lover doesn’t call anymore or hanging with a new group of girls, GoldLink comes to terms with the failures of his past fling, allowing an anthem for personal growth to emerge.
