The Blaseball round of the preliminaries! (There's one more Blaseball location in the bracket, but it got 2 submissions and therefore got bumped up a little higher.) Boston is a city overrun by a giant, sentient Garden that became alive because people loved it and it wanted to help them, and that's how a dystopian megacorp got overthrown. Truly a story for the ages, and enough to warm even this Bostonian-hater's heart. Chicago is also very much sentient, around, and Where You Are From. It is personified in Mx. Chicago, a deity-like figure representing all of Chicago. According to the wiki "Firefighters fans and Chicagoans are considered a hive mind or a collective unconscious at times". You are from Chicago. I am from Chicago. We are all from Chicago. Chicago is where we are from.

Part 1 of the SUNLESS SEA SMACKDOWN SECTION (i looove alliteration, don't you?) Both of these are from the Failbetter Games production Sunless Sea: Zubmariner. Aigul is literally an alive sea urchin with a crew of people living on it, and Nook is an "anarchic semblance of civilisation, nestled within the throat of some unknown leviathan". Which of these phenomenally alarming undersea cities will you vote for?

Part 2 of the Sunless Sea portion of the preliminaries! Nuncio is a giant island of postpeople and rats (components of any good city), where all undeliverable letters wash ashore, and Port Cecil is an island on a coral archipelago, which means it's literally alive insofar as coral is alive! Also they're obsessed with chess so that's cool. Which of these weird cities from Sunless Sea should continue on?

DESERT BLUFFS! VERSUS! CRYSTAL PALACE!
from the person who submitted it: crystal palace is the sentient(?) predictive computer of the rapid evening, a city sized analog computer where every act, every noise and movent, is part of the computation and the data. it is populated by people (who perform some of its actions, like moving levers, of maintenance), and also robotic "janitorial" staff who take the fire hose of predictions about everything and turn it into something usable and relevant. it is responsible for the 2 millennia role-based time loop in the civilization of which it is a part, where people, of their own free will and without realizing, fall into roles that repeat the lives of people 2000 years their predecessors.

from me: desert bluffs is a friendly desert community that then gets overrun by an evil corporation named strexcorp. it is the polar opposite and mortal enemy of night vale: while night vale is all about purple, darkness, and the unknown and untangible, desert bluffs is all about yellow, light, and BLOOD TEETH FLESH BLOOD BONES TEETH. night vale being sentient is an idea quite often tossed around in the fandom (it's in the competition too), and since desert bluffs mirrors it in every other way, why not let them both be sentient?

The London portion of the preliminaries!! Kraken is by a guy who writes about London a lot and already has another book in this tournament, and involves sentient tattoos, unions, giant squid, and cults! (Sounds like this London has a lot in common with its Fallen counterpart.) Stoneheart takes place in an "unLondon" inhabited by sentient statues and gargoyles. Very cool. Which of these Londons should progress to do battle with other Londons? (How many times can I say London before it stops sounding like a word?)
