A couple of the field horses are getting fat (ahem, Honey and Piper…) so we are trying out a round bale net to see if that will help control them. And also stop them from wasting so much and making a huge mess!

V3 of the round bale feeder courtesy of the handy other half! We're learning what works and what doesn't with each iteration and integrating changes into each new version to improve the design. Oh my goodness, Eleanor.... 😄 The verdict is still out on the big round bales for me (without a hay boss feeder to use for feeding - they're so blooming expensive but look like a good design). They're great at the beginning of a bale - relatively hands off (and no bucking bales needed as with small square bales), but as the sheep munch them down there is a definite element of maintenance required to keep the hay accessible for eating yet not so available the sheep waste it. Not sure the lower cost of round bale hay is worth the effort it takes to feed them! Who all feeds round bales out there to sheep? How do you do it and keep hay waste to a minimum?
