Maybe they haven't been hurt yet but they know they will be and they're terrified. Alone in their room, clutching a pillow so hard it hurts, and burying their face in it to muffle the sobs that they can't stop from coming. The terror is multiplied by the knowledge that Whumper could come in at any time and find them vulnerable. Maybe they're with a friend or teammate and they're having to muffle their sobs so they don't frighten them. Maybe they've been in this situation before and so they're kicking themselves, angry for crying because "come on, Whumpee, you're stronger than this! You've been through it at all before, you can handle it." Throwing their pillow across the room in anger and then, if they're shackled to the bed, having to sleep without it. Maybe they prefer anger to fear.
Alternatively maybe they're completely stoic and just lying awake staring at the wall thinking about all of the things that are in store for them. Maybe they're imagining it all or maybe the knowledge comes from experience
