**Thursday, April 5, 1912:** . To the people of #southampton #england the 5th of #April should have been an ordinary day, however, as many awoke in the early morning hours to open their blinds and shutters their eyes beheld an amazing sight... . The #royalmailship TITANIC was berthed at White Star Dock #44, her freshly painted hull (still being touched up in places) and towering #funnels glistened in the early #morning sunshine. The great #liner was a #majestic sight, towering over everything, with her masts, spars, and rigging 'dressed' in all manner of pennants and #flags to celebrate both her arrival and to commemorate the occasion of 'Good Friday'. . The people of Southampton were encouraged to enjoy the view of the new 'wonder ship' but were, however. barred from taking the customary 'tour' of the ship so often done on a new liner's arrival. The reason for this was simple... the #Titanic WAS NOT READY. As the date of her maiden voyage quickly approached there must have been many on the dockside, who watched the hustle & bustle of activity, if she would ever be ready to set sail at all... There was a certain tenseness in the air, as several other liners pulled into the nearby quays and began a process of tying off and prepping to transfer coal. . The maiden voyage of Titanic would be quite the #event all agreed, though one cannot help but wonder if anyone on that #whitestar #Dock or onboard, during her first day, could help but get a sense of uneasiness about this new leviathan. . Would she be ready in time? . . . #rmstitanic #maidenvoyage #titanicmemorial #rms #oceanlife #oceanliner #history #thisdayinhistory #Storied #treasures #storiedtreasures88 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb__7ovr2-H/?utm_medium=tumblr
