How to be more eco-friendly with your skincare 🌺
Being a beauty geek sure has its benefits, but unfortunately these don’t tend to extend to our planet’s health. The beauty industry is responsible for masses of waste every year, but now brands seem to be waking up to these problems with recyclable packaging, refill options and kicking cotton to the curb. But how can you start your sustainable beauty journey too? Here are 4 ways for you to get started!
1. Use a reusable make-up remover
Make-up, how we love thee. However, we really don’t love how much cotton we get through with the endless amount we have to buy in order to take the stuff off. Thankfully, you can save time and money by simply using a reusable make-up remover. I’ve been using my Face Halo diligently for almost two years now, and I could never imagine going back to my old ways. Simply wash after each use with soap and water, and toss it in the washing machine once a week and you’re good to go.
2. Look for biodegradable formulas
Sheet masks, eye masks and lip masks are jolly good fun on a Friday night, but the amount of waste they create? That’s not so great. Many of these types of products are made from materials that take forever to break down, so it’s important to keep an eye out for products that are labelled as biodegradable. Garnier have a range of biodegradable sheet masks and you can find biodegradable eye masks on Amazon, so you shouldn’t need to skip this super part of your skincare routine.
3. Try plastic-free packaging
Plastic-free can often equal unaffordable, but this doesn’t always have to be the case. There are plenty of shampoo and soap bars these days that don’t cost the earth (literally) and that cater to all sorts of beauty needs. Check your local health store or big brands like Lush for vegan options that smell delicious to ease your way into the eco lifestyle.
4. Keep an eye out for certifications
Palm oil is an ingredient that often sneaks its way into every beauty product imaginable, while other coveted ingredients cause destruction to land due to high demand. While it may be tempting to swear off these ingredients, it can be near impossible (and expensive) to do so. Instead, look out for RSPO certification for sustainably sourced palm oil, and accreditations from the Soil Association if you live in the UK. These will be clearly labelled on your beauty buys, so you can shop with a happy heart!
