Tui Birds, unique to New Zealand have two voice boxes and are known for their noisy, unusual call, different for each individual, that combine bellbird-like notes with clicks, cackles, timber-like creaks and groans, and wheezing sounds. Cowabunga!! This was one of our most favorite sites in Laos: Kuang Si Waterfalls. The lay of the land is rolling waterfalls and pools of seafoam green water. It's a miraculous site with frolicking kids from 2-102 years young swimming and meandering around. You could definitely spend all day here - we spent 4 hours there and STILL did not have enough time. There's a vigorous hike to the top and a three mile hike to some caves... He's such a happy and lovable dude! He's got these pet-inducing pheromones especially around the kitties. It always makes me laugh because even though he claims that he isn't a pet person, he always is so calm, gentle, and loving. I'm going to miss this guy for the next 24 hours while he takes a solo trip ton Muang Ngoi Neua. Which is a Lao town along the Nam Ou in Louangphrabang Province about an hour boat ride away from me. The current population is about 700, and of Lao Loum ethnicity.  He's planning to hike out to an even more remote village, check out some caves, and just Adventure it up. I, on the other hand, am planning to stay in the metropolis of Nong Khiaw to do a little writing, cooking classes, and maybe even experience my first herbal steam bath!! Nong Khiaw has a plenty of charm, a decent range of accommodation, plus conveniences such as 24 hour electricity. 🤸 But I was completely exaggerating about it being a metropolis... It is in comparison to Muang Ngoi, but it is still quite a small village. Traveling partners lesson 101: Always make time for yourselves and for you each to have time apart. It's like the tried and true adage, "absence makes the heart grow fonder." The people of Nepal have been some of the kindest and most welcoming that I've experienced in my travels so far. But there are doors that remain closed to me. This is at the Kumari temple, where the living goddess Kumari (a young girl, Kumari actually means virgin and is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Taleju) lives. She makes a brief appearance a few times a day but you're not allowed to take pictures of her. Hindu's and buddhists can go inside to receive a blessing but foreigners can not. The girl that is perceived to be the goddess Kumari remains so until her first period, after which she is seen as a normal woman and the quest for the new Kumari begins. From what I'm told there 10 Kumaris in Nepal of which I've only seen the royal Kumari in Kathmandu. Once one comes of age they search in certain communities (newar, shakya or bajracharya) for a girl with certain characteristics. Such as unblemished body without birthmarks, black straight hair, white teeth without gaps, slender body among several others. Once they have found one they test her because Kumari also has certain personality traits such as fearlessness. To test this they leave the young child in a room with 108 decapitated buffalos laid out in a sea of blood. Among this men with horrifying masks dance and if the girl cries this disqualifies her and they test the next one until they find a girl who can smile in that surrounding and enjoy the dance of the masked men.
