“Fans have been rooting for Claire and Carmy since the beginning”
THE BEGINNING?! BITCH WASN’T EVEN THERE IN THE BEGINNING
Says NO ONE !!!!
Like what in the white nonsense
i'm going to say something insane. i think the overall pronounced fandom cultural slide away from complex plotty violent work and towards kidfic and coffee shops AUs and cozy domestic romcoms is a symptom of fascism.
This is fascinating to consider vis-a-vis Sydcarmy where canonically the friction, the power imbalance, the economic struggles of the workers are very much present. Yet, the anguish over the romance has inspired multiple fantasies of a quick, cozy resolution where Syd and Carmy kiss and confess their feelings. I, for one, won't be satisfied till all the mess is denounced explicitly of how Carmy has failed Sydney as partner let alone friend over and over again and even the other members of the Bear (Nat, Marcus, Unc) have had an extractive, one-sided relationship with Syd, too. How can we champion "found family trope" when any workplace that describes itself as a family in 2025 is a massive red flag. That's also why I refuse to look away from the violence.
She got harassed at the workplace and never got a proper apology for it. Carmy it’s not reliable whatsoever and has sabotaged almost irremediably the last career endeavor she could embark on (not to mention what does this do to her reputation). She is triggered by economic pressure, because she has dealt with it her whole life. Her father’s heart attack and Marcus mother’s death is put aside in favor of gossip. Richie suggested to send flowers the way Neil sent flowers to Michael’s funeral. Everyone pressured her to sign the partnership agreement because they aren’t stupid, they know she is the last piece keeping everything for failing and yet nobody has checked emotionally on her, she feels put aside to the point she can even think she is “a waste of time and space” idk how much you can fix in s5 but they should had started yesterday.
When you add all this up, plus her still wanting the ridiculous (my opinion) Michelin star as validation for very personal reasons, they’re setting her up to crash out. The Red Shoes is a hint they’ve made three times now.
She’s been bottling this whole time. He has not. But he was bottling at Empire where he was not the boss and had an abusive boss which he reenacts to a degree at The Bear once he’s the boss. Power dynamics.
Now Syd is Exec for the first time, and Carmy has had his first business fail (like Sheridan Road was for her). Their positions are inverted, but they’re still both struggling and replaying old patterns.
Just a reminder that Syd got in Richie’s face and stabbed him and never apologized. Syd has also been mean to Tina and Marcus and Carmy when she’s frustrated. Syd told the entire kitchen on Friends & Family: Do I have time to go outside and scream “fuck”? Because Tina questioned her. Who will likely be her new CDC now. Syd whispering in Carmy’s ear “I’m not your babysitter” is also reminiscent of Chef David. Not Chef Terry.
Syd is shown as every bit as addicted to this work as Carmy has been in the past. She is just as ambitious.
Unlike Carmy, she isn’t a white guy with family connections to open doors and she’s not a white man in a white male-dominated field. She had to put herself through school and work her way though fine dining and still get shut down and then quickly moves on. Until now.
We don’t know if her family members invested in Sheridan Road and she feels like she let them down, which could be a big trigger for all of this for her and why she went to The Beef (another family) instead of starting over on her own again? Why she wants work-family and family-family all in one place?
All of these characters are complicated and informed by trauma. The showrunner has been building up to this with Syd. Whether he can execute it or not and be cognizant of how structural racism, class, gender plays into all of this? Phew. I don’t know. Not a lot of confidence at this point, but the pieces are certainly in place to do that.
It’s not just Carmy, either. Like @sublimepeachtriumph said, it’s his whole family and now the people at that restaurant who have tasted success and want those accolades (like Marcus got) and that star now.
I still think about this post.
I think one of my biggest pet peeve’s rn is people acting like Sydney is 100% in the right all of the time and has never done anything wrong ever when what makes her such a compelling character is the fact that, in spite of all of her hang ups and obvious issues, she tries to be kind.
Sydney is bad at taking no for an answer, she’s impatient, she’s passive aggressive, she’s avoidant, she’s stubborn, sometimes she’s even an asshole. And guess what? None of that invalidates the fact that she’s also incredibly kind and empathetic, or how thoughtful and selfless she is.
She is complex.
Stop reducing her to The World’s Most Perfect Princess Who Can Do No Wrong just because her trauma response is more palatable than Carmen’s. And then, start writing meta on the implications of why a BLACK woman might be so hesitant to voice her concerns and discuss her needs and wants. And when you’re done with that, I want a report on my desk by end of day discussing why even that doesn’t excuse acting like people should just be able to read your mind and intuit everything they’ve ever done to upset you EVEN WHEN they stop and take the time to tell you that they’re there to listen to you. It simply informs why she would do it in the first place.
Support women’s rights AND wrongs. Acting like Sydney is a saint robs her of color and character and three dimensionality. Let Sydney be The Most Perfect Princess Who Can And Has Done Wrong But IDGAF Because She’s Trying Her Best
I 100% agree with this
