The Prince did not like his belongings to be meddled with. Especially not his war plans, the carefully laid out tactics and maps in his study. He had noticed the changes and gotten the ideas beyond them, but he had been more than wary, suspecting an overzealous servant who was in need of losing a hand.
When he finally caught the culprit though… it was the Princess that had been sent here a week ago. His promised. Though so far they had not had a lot of interaction with each other. She was constantly surrounded by an entourage of maids and guards who tried to assimilate her into this and Rufus thought himself having better things to do than see who his father had picked out for him. Be the old man damned.
His hand was quick to grab her wrist, just as she made for taking one of the tactical pieces on his desk and his blue eyes were icy looking at her as he used his whole body to lead her away from the desk. Slowly, step by step backwards.
“And what exactly do you think you are doing here, Your Highness?”
For a brief moment as his hand encircled her wrist she was sure she’d hear the words execution falling from his lips. It was no mere rumor that the family Shinra were as handsome as they were cruel. No doubt on their strength and steel forces within themselves as well as their forces. This was why she was brought there to begin with. Marriage to the eldest son secured peace and safety for her kingdom and family. Assimilation was the best tactic for survival. Better to befriend a Shinra than it was to be only mere allies. Her issue was that she knew so little of them aside from legacy and fearful stories.
Maids and guards kept her corralled away from him and away from the family, his and her own as she was told to keep herself busy and to stay out of the way. She had no role here. No title aside from the prince’s future bride and the hopeful courts ideas of producing an heir.
It wasn’t enough to her mind. There had to be more. She had to know a little more of her husband before their wedding day. She had to have more than just a chamber and maids to busy her days with in sewing and visiting the courtiers. It took days of courage to summon the bravery she needed to slip out in the early mornings to explore on her own and find his study. He was never there, but traces of him were. A goblet left with sips of wine, books and scrolls and then the maps with figurines and markers for the coming war. Peace, she thought, was never enough for this family and she loathed the idea that her life would forever be filled with wars.
At least it would with the way he had set up his armies and plans. She hadn’t meant or intended to change the positioning, but they looked wrong. Many hours were spent in libraries of her youth and some of those books were occasionally those of war, and what war she was most familiar with was that of chess. Sacrificing knights, maneuvering bishops and marching forwards pawns while Rooks acted as centurions. She was aware of maneuvering war though she protested it, but it waging war was to be her life then it was best it was done quickly. More moments of peace to spare between the fighting so she took some mornings to rearrange piece and hope her hints at different strategies would be considered.
Apparently it was not so. “I-I was…” She hiccuped stepping back with each step of his. “-s-searching for …..y-you, my lord.”
