The General was clearly upset by what CC had said but the android couldn’t quite determine what had upset him. That was until Sephiroth asked if he was going to leave.

He relaxed a bit as Connor squeezed his shoulder. There were a lot of complex emotions running through him. He knew it was important that they save who they could, regardless of who they were or what they did...but another part of him felt the crippling failure of being unable to secure the target.

He shook his head. “I’m gonna go after him. I may be able to pick up a trail.” If they let up it only gave him more opportunities to hurt someone else. Whether they be human or android. “I can’t stop now.”

He set the dishes back down in the sink then before giving the young teenager his full attention. Out of habit, he ran a scan to make sure she was ok. With Ariadne, such a request could range anywhere from reaching something that was too high to hiding a body. He'd been around her enough to know to be cautious with such requests, especially while Caligo was away.

But, of course, he had a soft spot for the twins. He would always hear them out and be there to offer his support.

“My LED reflects the strain and quality of my mental processing and physical condition,” he explained. Though he seemed like he was...lost.

He considered the question for a moment, his LED going yellow. “I suppose...it’s because I don’t know how you’re doing otherwise.”

“Yes, they do, but you are still very important to me. I don’t particularly like when I’m unable to check in on you.”

Early that morning, Phoenix had been called up to the captain’s office for a briefing. Apparently, Detroit Central Fire would be getting a new android–a repurposed SQ800, to be precise. While relived he wasn’t being replaced with another of his model, Nix still couldn’t help the pang of jealousy and worry that ran through him. If this android proved to be more useful, would they scrap Nix in favor of the new, fancy military android? The captain, knowing Phoenix and his fears well, had advised him to play nice and to show the SQ800 around the firehouse.

The rest of the crew was out on a routine call and he’d been left behind to await their newest arrival. When he saw the Cyberlife van pull up to the firehouse, he stiffened up, bracing himself for an Oscar-worthy performance. As far as these Cyberlife employees were concerned, he was a machine and he needed to play the part. He met them outside, confirmed the package, and allowed them to bring the crate inside. He didn’t need to breathe, but he’d be holding his breath if he did, his LED yellow through the entire process. 

He watched as the android stepped out, saying nothing as the Cyberlife employees took the crate and left. “So…you’re the new rookie, then? You got a name pre-programmed or does the Captain need to register one for you?” Phoenix questioned, stepping in front of the much taller android. Phoenix’s model was designed to fit in tight spaces and so he stood several inches below the military model.

The crate wasn’t necessary, but it wasn’t as if CC could argue with the logistics of his transportation. He wasn’t broken. He was completely functional. He could have driven himself there if he really wanted to, but there was no chance of him pulling a stunt like that. That’d look suspicious. Even taking a taxi would have seemed strange. All he could do was go along with the theatrics of it all. Step inside the crate. Wait in the crate. Get moved around while inside said crate. Then step out of the crate and.... ta da! A shiny new SQ800. The two workers could then act like they hadn’t just rushed and haphazardly reset him twenty minutes before packing him up and dropping him off. 

Then, just like that, the android had signed for him and the two employees were gone before a human could show up and complain about the delivery or the product they had received.  He was admittedly a bit surprised to see that he was being received by another android, though he supposed he shouldn’t be. The humans likely had a lot more important things to do.

Now that it was just the two of them, he paused briefly to consider the potential consequences of giving his name. It wasn’t outlandish to believe he would have one already pre-programmed, especially considering he was ‘repurposed’. Though CC preferred the term retired. His soldier days were over and he was starting a whole new life. Like his teammates who had decided not to re-enlist. They were out living civilian lives now. In the complex narrative CC had devised for himself in his head, he was a recently retired soldier planning to start his new civilian job as a firefighter. Or something like that. He wasn’t exactly sure what would be expected of him here. Why would a fire station want a retired SQ800? He supposed he had some of the advantages a typical model in this line of work would have. Strength and durability likely being his two most attractive features. That and his price tag that had been practically cut in half.

He looked over the android before finally answering. “My name is CC.”
