Pues finalmente tenemos decisión sobre las puertas que abrimos y cerramos.
A big vibe for today 👌
What is Genre and Why Does it Matter?
Have you ever sat and thought of how many specific genres there are in the world for every different type of media there is? Probably not, because you would be sitting there for weeks on end trying to list them all off. But, what even is genre and why should you care?
I define genre as a means of grouping certain pieces of media together based on similar stylistic features. It is how we select the movies we want to watch, or the music we want to listen to. It is a concept that allows not only creators, but also consumers to connect with different styles of media. Authors Philip Rayner, Peter Wall, and Stephen Kruger agree in their book ‘AS Media Studies: The Essential Introduction’. According to Rayner, Wall and Kruger, genre is
“the term used for the classification of media texts into groups with similar characteristics.”
But, you mustn’t just tick the boxes of what characteristics a certain genre has, yet use your influences to create something totally unique – this is where sub-genres come in to place (eg Alternative Rock, Pop Rock etc).
Let’s look at a popular Australian band, Sticky Fingers. A quick google search says that Sticky Fingers falls under many genres such as Indie Rock, Reggae Rock, Reggae Fusion, Psychedelic Rock, and Soul Music. Much of their music reflects many features of these genres, however the genre that stands out the most to me is Psychedelic Rock. The features of psychedelic rock that Sticky Fingers have captured in their music help to create such elaborate works, like “Bootleg Rascal” and “Rum Rage”, which seem to be very popular in today’s day and age. They generously include lots of ‘trippy’ electronic effects including delay, reverb, distortion and shifted phased sounds. They also play around with layering lots of harmonic vocals in to the background of their tracks. Adding these effects on to the standard ‘rock’ genre, allows them to use their voice to create something totally original and unique.
But why does this matter to me as an audio engineer? An artist’s genre says a lot about their style, target audience and creative intent. As an audio engineer, these are key factors to take into account when mixing a production. Knowing the artist’s intent and having references to this when mixing, say a psychedelic rock song, you can have that knowledge of the effects and techniques that are used to produce those sounds and produce something amazing. So basically, genre is an important aspect to not only an artist’s career in creating, but also and engineers career in knowledge and production.
