felt like sharing my headcanon for Mipha and Sidon's mother – this is Queen Runala :]

as you can see Dorephan's genes hardly contributed to Sidon's creation. also i imagine he was a grumpy person when he was younger. Runala definitely put him back in his place a lot and he had no choice but to chill

@yupperonies thank you for your comment!! I've been meaning to answer it in a proper post and, well. Here it is. And it's kind of a long one, filled with self-indulgent headcanons and worldbuilding, so buckle up!

(This is a continuation of my Queen Runala headcanon infodump series thing. She is my headcanon OC of Mipha's and Sidon's mother.)

This here is a map of the Zora territories (and places of general interest to them). The Zora's Domain we know in canon is the capital, also known as the Royal Domain, where the ruling monarch(s) live(s) and govern(s) over their people. There are four Sea Domains in the Faron, Necluda, Akkala, and Lanayru seas respectively. These four Domains have their own rulers in the form of Ladies and Lords, but all answer to the authority of the Royal Domain.

To answer the original question, Runala is indeed from outside Hyrule, but not from the same place as Yona is – Runala is from the Necluda seas, while Yona is from the Lanayru Sea Domain (which is ruled by her parents, Lord Ahtola and Lady Imu).

Also! I haven't drawn them here because I haven't decided where they're supposed to be yet, but there are several islands where the sea Zora have set up cities or trading posts – though the majority of their settlements are underwater.

The Zora's territory stretch between Hyrule's shores and a deep, vast underwater canyon known as the "Godless Abyss" – an ominous name for an ominous place.

...Anyway!

And here you have a little page I drew up to explain the differences between the different Domains and their population. It is mostly self explanatory. I haven't thought in too much detail about how Runala and Dorephan would get together but I imagine it would take them a long while to go from mutual annoyances to friends and eventually lovers.

Even after becoming queen, Runala doesn't give up her job as a royal guard. Not sure how the ranking system works in the Zora's military but she'd be high up there.

I've been having a little bit of a rough time lately so it's been difficult finding time to make art! but I've been thinking of Yona and her relationship with the royal family which prompted this drawing :)

In my head, Mipha and Yona were attached to the fins as children, always getting into all sorts of mischief together! More often than not, the guards would have to fetch them back from whatever newest adventure they'd gotten into. They were both very ambitious little girls, in awe of the adults around them and especially of the royal guard, and swearing they too would be great warriors one day.

After Sidon was born though, they both calmed down a little, cause they wanted to be good role models for him... only a little though!

Runala quite liked having Yona around – she brought Mipha out of her shell, and it was good to see her daughter have such fun with a friend her age. She also felt a little maternal towards Yona, knowing how strict and demanding her parents were. (which reminds me, let me know if you'd like a post about them one of these days!) Yona regarded the royal family, and especially Mipha and Sidon, as her own family. They were the siblings she never had and she felt she had to protect them, even as a child.

Runala died some years after Sidon's birth. He was so little he could hardly understand what happened, constantly asking where his mother had gone. With Dorephan being utterly crushed with grief, Mipha would take care of Sidon a lot in that time, even though she herself was absolutely inconsolable. And Yona tried her best to be there for them both. The three of them had to grow up very quickly after that.

When the signs of the Calamity begun to arise, Dorephan cut off travel to and from the Sea Domains in the hopes they would be spared the onslaught. Yona never saw Mipha again, and it would be a little over a century before she reunited with Sidon – except, this time with the weight of an arranged engagement that meant they could never rekindle the sibling relationship they had before.

HAHA wellll Sidon had to get his genes from somewhere. It's a pretty unique appearance he has, after all.

(ok now whatever you do, do NOT think about Sidon feeling alone and different for most of his life because he doesn't know any other shark Zora and there's nobody who looks quite like him or functions quite the way he does. The only person who did, his mother, passed away before he could truly get to know her.)

((and then, meeting this man who's also different from all Hylians. Who also doesn't quite function like his peers do. Learning to be the odd one out together.))

Headcanon: Granny Zora (Dorepha's mom) is usually left alone to fight while Dorepha and the other guards stay behind, because her main fighting tactic is blasting sound waves at enemies (being a sperm whale) and their organs are blasted into oblivion

(also I love the little patellas you gave her on her tail!!! Such a nice detail !!)

I actually based Granny Zora on hunchback whales but the idea of a Zora blasting people into bits with their voice is kinda metal tbh i like it

In my head, Granny is a healer with some SERIOUS trauma when it comes to battle, which is why she forbids Dorephan from learning to fight, and also why the Humongous Whale Prince of the Zora would need a personal guard at all. Dorephan feels it is his duty and his right to be able to protect his people, and he resents the need to have a bodyguard (and Runala by extension).

Also if anyone has an idea of what to name Granny Zora, I'd love to hear it :)

(also english isnt my first language so i'm not sure what patellas are but I assume it is the same as barnacles?)
