Running in the rain
Wednesday night I got drowned! I had no choice. It was the end of the day and I needed to run.
Gotta keep the streak alive y’all. I’m not even someone who says y’all - look what this streak is turning me into. A monster! Too dramatic…a mutant. Better.
I love running in the rain! But I hate starting in the rain!
I repeated this enough ad nauseam to Danielle (one of my Black Toe training partners). She probably felt like she preferred to have her run shoes get sucked into a puddle rather than listen to me whine one more time.

But seriously. It had been years since I had started in the rain. About this time last year I got stuck in the rain in one of my long runs, to the point where my iPhone broke permanently. I had to get a very expensive replacement, it was traumatizing:
I had my first test run with this on a rain soaked Sunday long run, and was going to blog about it afterwards. But I was too upset from nursing my wet iPhone in the phone hospital bed…a bed of rice to be exact (the remedy for a wet phone).
Armed with a replacement phone and $300 out of pocket, I went for a 2nd run with the HB Tune yesterday, in sunnier conditions! A dry run, if you exclude the tears expended from the $300.
Probably my most expensive training run of all time. I fucking hate the rain! I much prefer snow, at least that doesn’t cause device damage.
But at least that experience wasn’t starting in the rain. I was already warmed up.
When I was younger and competing in Orienteering, I was forced to deal with the rain. Racing has a way of exposing you to different climates - you can choose the best part of the day to train in, but you can’t choose the weather when racing.
I had to deal with it when the timer went off to race. I remember that brutal first 5 minutes of drops running down your skin, making you colder. The pain of every branch or twig hitting your fingers is magnified too, I hated that.
After those early experiences I then learnt that running in the rain wasn’t so bad if you were warmed up first. Being from a warm climate, that would mean incredibly warmed up. Like double my normal warm up time.
Even better than that though, are those times when you're halfway through an intense run and then it starts to rain. There’s no better feeling than that! Need a cup of water from a volunteer stand to splash your forehead? No thanks, I have the rain!

When it rains and you’re racing you feel slick, your body temperature is cooled down, and I have a theory that it gives you less friction.
I guess the point is that rain sucks sometimes, but it also has it’s advantages. Like snow. Like sun. Like heat. Like a super annoying bug epidemic in the Spring.
But it’s learning to see the advantages in things, especially the things we can’t control, that’ll make us better runners.
