A little thing I've made for the febuwhump list, day 6, hypothermia. Not sure how whumpy it is but I missed whumping Joshie ~~
Lawson's busy when Josh calls the first time, so he calls stella instead.
Warning: slight hypothermia, getting worse but not showed, open ending (leading to more whump perhaps)
Wrapping himself in a towel after a warm shower that did almost nothing to send away the cold, Josh fished the phone out of a pocket of the jacket.
No text, no missed calls. Why should they be there, after all, the day had been a success, somehow. It didn’t feel like one, or perhaps it was the cold.
Blinking tiredly and shuffling to the couch he dialed Lawson’s number by memory. It took him five whole rings, and Josh had almost closed the call, except he really wanted to hear from him.
“Josh, hey. You good?”
He nodded, blinked, realized that Lawson couldn’t see him, obviously, and sighed.
“Josh?”
“Yeah, yeah… I’m good. Tired.” He curled up on the couch, shit, the shower really didn’t help. “Just wonderin’ if you could drop by, perhaps?”
Please, he thought childishly, please come here.
Lawson hesitated briefly on the line and Josh frowned.
“Shannon got caught in a bit of an accident, someone has to stay with her to check on her…” He hesitated a little more. “Are you sure you’re good?”
If I say no would you come?
“Yeah. It’s alright, I– see you tomorrow, right?”
“Is that even a question? - Lawson chuckled and Josh tried to make himself one with the couch. - Get some rest, Joshie.”
The call was closed before he could even say something back. Maybe… Maybe he should’ve lied. Say that he wasn’t feeling alright, say that he called because he needed Lawson there, with him.
Nah, lying wasn’t his strongest point, and surely not in that exact moment.
It felt weird, waking up curled on the couch and still shivering, he was pretty certain he would’ve gotten warm by then, with the shower, and the clean, warm clothes and the blanket he threw on himself. Instead he still felt cold. His hands, his feet tucked under his body, his nose even. every bit of him felt unbearably cold.
For a moment he thought of calling Lawson again, but he was busy, right? Shannon. An accident. He– She needed someone to stay with her, and he volunteered. Of course he did.
Still he picked the phone and dialed a number.
“‘osh?” Stella yawned as she answered, he barely paid attention to who he was calling, at this point he could have called anyone, even Michael if anything.
"Stell…"
"Something wrong Josh?"
She asked quietly, just like Lawson did. He could lie, but what lie would be acceptable at that hour of the morning?
"yeah…" he mumbled, still shivering slightly, his eyelids falling closed no matter how much he tried. God, he was so tired. "I don't feel good, Stell…"
He admitted. He heard her scramble through her own room, getting clothes and shoes on probably.
"are you home? Alone?"
"yeah… you don't have to come here."
He Heard her chuckle softly.
"Of course I do, you just called me Josh. Give me ten, alright?" he hummed.
"spare key in the plant. - pause, Josh blinked, breathed out slow, blinked some more. - the pot. I mean… There's a pot, with a plant. Fake. Out of the door."
Stella chuckled again.
"I got it, Josh, relax. Why are you alone?" she asked after a while. "Lawson?"
"Shannon. She's -- she got hurt, I think. Laws's staying with her."
"and you didn't tell him you weren't okay, right?"
"I'm just cold Stell. I--"
"I'm coming over."
The call closed and Josh let his phone go, slipping with a soft thud in the floor from numb fingers. He was cold, still so cold. Yet the shivers stopped. It made no sense, he had been careful, they took turns with the jackets, to avoid problems, to avoid that.
Perhaps he was catching something, not related to the mission and the walk-in freezer. He had never liked the cold, he hated it actually, getting cold so fast and so easily, and now he felt like he would freeze. And feeling cold made him emotional, made him call people, workmates, for comfort, like he was some sort of kid.
Cold. He thought again. He--he really hated it. It made him so, so tired.
Stella parked in front of the apartment and fetched the key from the plant, the most obvious hiding place ever, and yet she was glad Josh left it there. He sounded off over the phone. Confused, distracted.
"Josh?" she called, letting herself in and dropping the key in a small table together with her jacket. She heard a soft mumble from the living room, a hand waved at her from the couch and she smiled to herself.
Smile that soon disappeared when she walked closer and saw the pale face as she turned the light on. She kneeled next to him, put a hand over his cheek and Josh's eyes fluttered open.
"you're cold, freezing." he blinked, taking a moment to put her into focus before smiling weakly.
"It's not good. Josh, why didn't you say something before? I mean, before we got home." he leaned over her, over her warm hand.
"everyone's busy. Michael's angry… you were right, I didn't act as a good sergeant, didn't want to bother everyone with whining 'bout being cold." he muttered and Stella cursed softly. She wrapped the blanket tighter around him and rubbed his arm.
"it's not whining and-- Josh you're not a bad sergeant, you know that. Come on, now. We need to get you warm. Bath?"
"taken already…" he closed his eyes. "'m just tired, Stell."
"first we need to get you warm. How did you even--no, no, it doesn't matter."
Me and Michael are fine. She thought, grabbing a second blanket and draping it over him.
"karma is quite a bitch, mh?" he whispered, making Stella give a small laugh.
"it is, but hey… you're gonna be alright, heard me? You're just a little bit cold, and your favorite person is there, right?"
Josh gave her a small smile before letting his eyes close.
"Josh? No, no hey… I need you awake, Josh. Please."
Stella shook his shoulders, his head lolling to the side, his face pale and lips blue.
~~
Lawson's phone rang and rang and rang as he stirred on the couch in Shannon's house.
"yeah?" he didn't look at the id, too tired and still half asleep.
"It's Stella, Lawson. - she said over the line, her tone slow, her words calculated. - I'm at the hospital."
"what?! What happened? Are you alright?" he shot up from the couch, almost tripping over the shoes he left next to it the night before.
"I--yes. It's not me. It's Josh."
