It felt like the right time to crack open this 2017 Foppiano Petite Sirah. It turns out to have been a great call. This variety is popping up more across Northern California wine regions and we’ve had several from various AVAs. But we have a soft spot for Sonoma PS, and Russian River Valley in particular. This Foppiano was everything I want my PS to be: deep, dark brooding purple; explosively aromatic; tannins you have to chew; and a jumble of dark fruits, pepper and spice. They present Petite Sirah as their flagship wine and we can see why. Rosé wine doesn’t have to suck. The two choices shouldn’t be (1) overly sweet with high levels of residual sugar or (2) face-puckering acid, no alcohol all stainless steel. This 2019 Russian River Vineyards Rosé of Pinot Noir (14.4% abv) is a beautiful expression of what Rosé wine can be. That incredibly deep, rich red color results from the winemaker using the Saignée method vs direct press. I won’t waste space with an explanation of the process - Wikipedia has you covered on this. Have you had wine from Marimar Estate in Sonoma County? Marimar Torres is part of the Torres wine family in Spain but several decades ago came to California and started making wine. This 2010 Syrah/Tempranillo blend might be the best wine I’ve had this year. I don’t think they make this blend anymore but - wow! At almost a decade old it showed not even a hint of age. It was just beautiful. I have never had this blend before and it was so smooth and silky. The fruit was still alive along with earthiness and acidity and spice. I wish I had another one to open in 5 more years and see how it’s holding up. ————————————————- The other wine we enjoyed was also a 2010 - this one a skin-contact wine from Roxanich winery in Croatia. It was a hit among our guests - an amazing current vintage wine that has aged in barrel for 6 years.
