RUSTY: Paul’s like the most diverse artist in the universe. I mean you think about the White Album: he had Blackbird and Helter Skelter on the same record. And I think that’s kinda awesome! Because if you look at someone’s playlist, no one has all reggae songs, or all heavy metal songs or all EDM, or whatever. It’s usually a diverse thing. Anyway, where we come from that’s a huge compliment.
RUSTY: I’m a little bit of a goofball, myself. I always was a musician first and a social being second. Maybe a number of musicians can relate to that? And that’s something I think, over the course of time, especially working with Paul, being forced to being around other humans... Paul’s a gracious guy and is very inclusive of everybody in the room, puts people at ease, and I think some of those things have maybe rubbed off, hopefully, by osmosis.
But that was something I never really clocked, or paid a lot of attention to, until I started hanging out with Paul: that social muscle that’s really necessary.
As well as that internal thing that makes people gravitate towards music in the first place. It’s just this ethereal way to communicate. (x)
Q: You've been with Paul for some time now. Has he ever told you specifically what he likes about your playing?
RUSTY: He's a man of few words. He will occasionally say, 'Wow, Rusty, I really like that bit you did.' But oftentimes it's about what he doesn't say.
The bottom line is, I'm still with him, so obviously he approves. That's the compliment right there. [laughs] (x)
