My Very First Lady Knight
I played Magic: the Gathering semi-avidly back in high school in the late ‘90s. Not competitively, but with friends in the mornings before class and during lunch. Most of them had better cards than me, though, and I’m pretty sure I lost most of the time. Even though she wasn’t my most powerful card, my favorite card was Ruth Thompson’s “Order of the White Shield.”
For all intents and purposes, she was the first lady knight I ever encountered, and though I didn’t realize it at the time, she did a lot to awaken my interest in strong, imposing heroines. Granted, her breastplate is a terrible design, and even back then it bugged me that her cloak billows in the wind, but her hair and the horse’s tail don’t. But I did and do love her obvious strength and authority, and ever since I’ve loved seeing strong, courageous heroines in any media.
Trying out my new scanner, I decided to pull out my 20+ year-old MTG cards and revisit my old friend. She looks worse-for-wear, but she’ll always have a special place among my favorite lady knights.
