An “onna sanshirou” is a Japanese term for a woman who’s skilled at judo, inspired by the classic novel Sugata Sanshirou. This title refers to Yuki, a high school girl who’s also a judo practitioner, and the first female to lead a fighting game. Raimais

Taito’s 1986 title Arkanoid was an update of Atari’s brick-breaker Breakout, adding elements like power-ups and enemies. The designer, Akira Fujita, looked to continue the theme but turn toward the dot-eater genre – popularized by Namco’s Pac-Man, but technically started by Sega/Gremlin’s Head-On – and evolved it with the 1988 arcade title Raimais (pronounced “ray maze”).

Bonze Adventure

Drawing some clear inspiration from the Ghost n’ Goblins series, Taito’s Bonze Adventure is an arcade platformer that draws from Buddhism and Japanese lore. King Emma, the Japanese Buddhist lord of hell, has gone crazy and unleashed a horde of youkai, and it’s up to a Buddhist monk named Bonze Kackremboh (along with Tosenboh, in two-player mode) to defeat them. The cultural touchpoints are numerous throughout, making Bonze Adventure more than just another arcade platformer.

Heretic

For each industry defining game in history, there are the games that sit in the wake of the tsunami of their influence. More than mere clones, these innovate on the original formula, and bring new ideas to the table They are really good games in their own right that live forever with the comparison to the original. Saints Row is GTA but goofy, Silent Hill is Resident Evil with David Lynch influence. Heretic is Doom, but fantasy, though it took a little while for the series to grow out of its originator’s shadow.
