shapeshifter joel au!

(+ Smallidarity, but this is mostly an intro post that focuses on Joel)

Joel is some kind of shapeshifter prince who was othered and quietly despised by his family, to the point where he was forced to endure a spell that would, supposedly, keep him human. But he escaped, and the spell only ended up half-working. His abilities are the palace's best-kept secret.

The King puts out a message to the kingdom that whoever finds the prince can marry him (or... whatever) and will be rewarded handsomely.

By day, Joel can shapeshift as much as he pleases. By night, he loses this ability completely. Several people have tried to catch him, but none have figured out that the huge, snarling wolf that drove them away is actually the prince they're looking for.

Eventually, he settles in a ruin within a clearing, hidden in the middle of the woods. With nowhere to go, he ends up living there for a couple of months. But then...

An injured, delirious hunter comes stumbling into the clearing, the stench of blood in the wind.

Joel's guard is up in an instant, transforming easily into his wolf form. The hunter's eyes go wide when he sees him, staggering back in terror. Joel growls, now larger than the average wolf, inching closer to try and scare him back into the forest.

The hunter pales, white as sheet for a few moments before—

Joel blinks. Did he just... Faint?

He nudges the guy with his snout. Very much unconscious.

Internally, Joel groans. Seriously?

He could just put the guy in the forest himself, leave him for... Whatever hungry fella stumbles upon him. Which... Okay, that feels a bit much, right? Poor guy probably just got lost...

A thought arises, making him grimace.

He's gonna regret this so bad.

Begrudgingly, he carries the guy to where he's set up camp, a sizable hunk of cobbled stone that might have once been a tower. He sets him outside, just next to his campfire, and decides to wait.

(...When Jimmy wakes up, he's greeted with a crossbow to the face.)
