oh man. ohhhhhhh mannnnn i have SHIT to say about their relationship ougigjgh ive been WAITITNG FOR AN OPPORTUNITY forgive me if this isn't canonical at all i need to rewatch the cutscenes again
when or if I started shipping it:
i feel like saying i ship them means that i think they're good for each other which is Incorrect
my thoughts:
ok hear me out on this one but I think it's a mutually toxic/abusive relationship. like there's the obvious stuff with like katrina literally creating a whole bunch of robots to keep him out but also
it was implied ryder has nightmares abt katrina (like maybe he was joking but Come On)
he was like, really nervous about going to katrina's home??? which always confused me because like, i feel like if he was still actively pursuing her he wouldn't gaf. like it could be argued that he moved on but when you look at the rest of the cutscenes he really didn't lol
im like 80% sure ryder flinches when he hears katrina's voice one time
tldr: katrina heavily dislikes ryder and ryder is both simultaneously afraid and desperate for her??????? what is his DEAL (bpd)
What makes me happy about them:
idk how to answer this one tbh there is nothing happy about them
What makes me sad about them:
ig the fact that their "attraction" to one another was more like, them playing their parts (action hero, attractive villain chick) and at the end of the day they're absolutely awful together and they never liked each other at all (or atleast katrina didn't like ryder). like once the performance stops they realize they liked the character not the actor (??? does this make any sense) like maybe ryder loves what katrina represents and not for who she actually is idk
Things done in fanfic that annoys me:
literally i don't think ive seen a single fic about them but i don't see katrina's abuse acknowledged as much as ryder's lol/lh
Things I look for in fanfic:
n/a
My kinks:
????? genuinely what does this one meannnn
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
i do think katrina genuinely loved viktor. ryder is getting put in the Bitchless Cube
My happily ever after for them:
they separate 4ever and ryder stops being obsessive lol (or they never meet in the first place)
My eyes and brain hurt so instead of watching Knack 2, I'm mostly listening to it.
So far, I noticed that Knack's spooky choir when he uses his powers in the first game is swapped out for something else in the second.
Then I switched to the Latin American Spanish dub, for Reasons.
Lucas sounds like a nerd.
Knack's voice is still very deep, but softer. I'm not sure how to describe it.
"Holaa~" I'm DEAD lmao!
Lucas is very not-a-jerk in this one. I'm surprised and delighted. "Ya estás listo, Knack?" is asked in a very friendly manner. His next phrase is some variation of hurry up, Knack, I want to leave/play, but the tone doesn't carry any scorn that I can hear. He just really wants to get going and is maybe distracted. He only starts getting impatient with "¡Vamos, Knack!" At which point Knack is already on his way.
Ryder sounds mostly the same? In terms of his Adventurous Hero archetype. His voice is a bit deeper and lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.
Lucas is still absolutely capable of making fun of the Doctor.
And Ryder is still capable of sounding like a poor meow meow. "Frí-í-o-o-o!" (Cold)
I am fairly happy with the portrayal of Lucas's character so far. He still acts childish because that part of the script is unavoidable, but tone of voice makes all the difference. In contrast in the English dub he seems angry and ungrateful.
The channel I'm watching was recommended by someone on Instagram. It's called Emu2k9. There are no subtitles, so it's a good idea to have some knowledge of Spanish. Sadly, I am stupid and my Spanish teacher was crazy.
Now at the request of my sibling I'm watching a French dub movie that cuts out a lot of stuff. Lucas speaks very softly. Knack's voice is so funny he sounds like a Martian sometimes. Or like he's the personification of gravel. Or an old man.
Because I'm a chatterbox. Sorry to @bestbuybathroom if the answer to your ask was overwhelming.
Lucas:
Liked school. Very smart.
Lost his mom in a fire when he was 8 and he lost all his belongings.
None of his blood relatives wanted to adopt him.
May or may not exhibit some bully behaviors.
Cried at night
vaguely suicidal
Had few/no friends
Was exhausted all the time
Threw tantrums
was otherwise polite to grown-ups
was/is interested in physics.
Loves puzzles
Raided the beverage tables for hot cocoa mix. Straight up ate it a few times.
Dedicated his life to solving the orb as a way to prove his self-worth, essentially. Vaguely obsessive/possessive.
Liked to hold the orb and carry it around where possible.
I may have accidentally made every character autistic.
Was 10 when Knack was 'born'
12 in the first game, 16 in the second game.
Acted as the older brother to Knack first. Treated him somewhat like a Toddler and a Pet in one.
Thought of Knack as *his* achievement, not the Doctor's.
Can be willfully ignorant.
Taught Baby Knack good stuff and funny stuff but also bad stuff.
Reenacted some things his mother would do as a means of affection, e.g bedtime stories, dancing. Kind of acted as a pseudo-parent.
Thought Baby Knack was dying when Knack was very sleepy.
Got good at reading Knack's body language.
Talked to the Doctor for Knack. Was the first to figure out Knack is able to communicate.
sometimes imitates Knack's mannerisms and vice versa.
Rarely jealous, but it does come up.
Kick-starts Knack's mischievous streak and teaches him some of his more overtly animal-like behaviors.
Thinks of Knack as Little Knack
Was very grabby with Baby Knack and often still touches Knack for this or that.
Grows confident that Knack would never hurt him. Too confident in some cases; for example taking something from a Baby Knack who was growling at him.
Would pass out if his scalp is massaged, but also very sheepish about it.
Sees himself in Knack.
Grew skeptical of the Doctor's authority
Encourages Knack to try new things
Knack & Lucas:
Switch big-brother-little-brother roles from scene to scene. Vulnerability, protection, defense and projection.
Ryder:
could not take care of Lucas while in the throes of grief.
gave Lucas the holoprojector locket.
convinced the Doctor to take Lucas in.
Gave Lucas a knife for his 12th birthday. In the original post I said butterfly knife because it's cool. I am now convinced that it's a soil knife to dig poop holes, because it's funny.
Doctor Vargas:
Played peek-a-boo with Lucas when the boy was a toddler
Super lonely
Throws himself into his work to push away his grief. Inadvertently teaches this to Lucas.
Well-meaning but selfish
Doesn't know what Lucas needs to heal.
Treated Lucas like he was sick when he cried.
Introduced Knack's orb to Lucas in an attempt for Doc and Lucas to both heal.
Took Lucas to museums and aquariums etc. Later Lucas and Knack. Later Lucas and Knack and Charlotte.
Initially thought of Knack as a kind of device.
Gave Lucas the Grappling Gun for his 12th birthday.
Once describes Lucas as having become more responsible since Knack came into their lives.
Knack:
Started out with 0 knowledge. Minor intuitions baked in, much like any infant.
Fell asleep for the first time in Lucas's arms. Doc had to carry him to his own room because he is a heavy boy even when Little.
Had a kind of imprinting process. It played a major part in his early behavior and the development of his personality. It sounds like a big deal and it kind of is, but it's not any more special than human babies imprinting. Occasionally more robot angle.
In canon, Knack's role seems to depend on his size. I like to subvert this on occasion.
EEEEE I don't use Twitter because I can't navigate but I took another look and found someone!
They're doing what I'm trying to do here, but much nicer looking AND have a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff like concept arts! Ryder WAS going to have a gun!
do u have any random headcanons for any of the knack characters lol
I wrote down as many of my headcanons as I could remember (71). And then sorted out the ones for the characters (58 or so). I feel like I forgot some. Here is a not-exactly-random selection of ten fifteen:
The Doctor claims to have spent decades learning the secrets of the relics. But the sad truth is, Knack’s orb was shelved for a very long time; it reminded the Doctor of what he lost the day he found it.
Knack has an actual rectangular phone rather than a wristwatch. It’s funny to watch him eat it when he wants to put it away.
Baby Knack was born not knowing how to initiate sleep. So he wore himself out over the course of a couple days until he finally passed out during troubleshooting. I wanted the Doctor to do it, but Lucas figured it out first that the little thing wanted a hug.
Lucas (almost) never refers to Charlotte as “Mom,” because that title is Reserved. He does call her “Mother” (as in, one who mothers), especially when he’s doing a bit, and sometimes “Ma.”
I think Katrina would wear a fedora at least once.
When Lucas and Knack were younger, Lucas would often press his forehead to Knack’s forehead and scratch him behind the ears.
Knack had a phase where he jump-scared Lucas and even the Doctor at every opportunity.
Charlotte has a minor hobby collecting jewelry
Knack grows to refer to Charlotte as “Mom.” He was very excited to learn that having a mom was an option for him.
Any friends or lovers Charlotte made during her time among goblins were cut off from contact by Gundahar. This was shortly after he moved her to live in his castle.
Ryder tries to be a stoic kind of guy, but it’s easy to tell when he’s upset because his face reddens, especially around his eyes.
Charlotte picked up sewing and sometimes makes Knack and Lucas new outfits.
Somewhat early on, Lucas learns to interpret Knack when he’s little and talks to the Doctor for him.
Deflecting is Knack’s favorite move.
Lucas often spoke to Knack’s dormant orb. Not in the way that he expected a response, but more like how a doctor would explain what he’s doing to his patients.
Top 18 of my favorite full-body poses of Little Knack, from the first game.
He still glows brightly from manifesting, here, but I like this expression because it reminds me of a kitten somehow lol.
I'm not sure why I like this one so much. He is far quicker at climbing the giant relic than this image describes, but there's something like, I like the shape and there is an energy there.
The composition? Is so pretty? You might notice that my avatar is a sketch of this (as of early June 2023. I know I will change it again).
This one, I really like: the color and shadows of the night, the grey stone, and drama of the pose. It's not really representative of the scene since he gets back up quickly and seems no worse for wear, but I still like it.
Knack has such long arms in the first game, that when he isn't running and is more casually walking, he sometimes holds his hands out just a bit while he swings them to avoid dragging. It produces an interesting effect.
More below; Thought it would be nice to cut off after 5 images to avoid long posts.
Trying to decide whether this one will make the cut. I like the hunched over crouch look, not sure why. Also did anyone notice they straightened his posture in the second game? I'll have to check again.
The sunset does a pretty good job of putting those carvings in stark relief. Literally! Look up "define in relief". Anyway I just love the colors, texture, and detail here.
Put that boy on a skateboard. Need I say more?
I'm mainly just putting this here because it can be hard to notice, although I think even the animators play pretty loose with it, but Knack's pupils may still be pupils when he small; there's a radial pattern that could define his eye region, and the pupils tend to move within that pattern, except for when they don't.
Once again I like the colors, the energy. You know he's going to hop off that rock. He is so Shaped.
The contrast here is perfect! You can see Knack and the relics lit up against the shadowed cliff. There is pleasing visual interest drawing the eye from the little sprinkle to the relics more up close and visually larger, you can tell the relics are falling away as Knack plummets. Interestingly, they seem to come off in layers.
Might remove this since I can't brain. Something like, the poses are nice and the lighting. There's somewhat the arm-swing I pointed out earlier.
Oh my goodness this one! Hi! I want to also include the smile he does, but that's a close-up.
And the high-five! YEAH!
I love Knack's expression in this one hehehe. Kind of wish I could combine it with another one where the Doctor and Ryder aren't awkwardly mid-stride.
BEAST BEAST BEAST
I just love that impish grin.
And the kinetics of this one are so nice I think. You can tell which direction he's going based on where his ears flap around.
That's basically it. I wanted to share screenies of the second game also, but my mama's laptop can't handle all the Knack.
