Look at them. I am joyfully claiming right now that these Lilikin designs are the absolute best versions of Tifa, Yuna, and Rydia. 🥺

But honestly, the biggest trap of World of Final Fantasy is its aesthetic. You go in expecting a super adorable, relaxing chibi monster-catcher, and halfway through you realize the story is incredibly complex, deep, and gets unexpectedly dark. It is easily one of the most underrated games Square Enix has ever put out.

The stark contrast of heavy palette-knife ridges, deep chiaroscuro shadows, and that single vibrant accent color brings an entirely different, cinematic mood to the cast.

What Loving Rydia Says About YOU! | Final Fantasy 4

Rydia’s story in Final Fantasy IV is so much bigger than “child becomes powerful summoner.” It is basically a 16-bit katabasis: the ancient mythic descent into the underworld, where a hero enters death, exile, or darkness and returns transformed. Orpheus, Heracles, Odysseus, Persephone — all carry versions of that pattern. Rydia is thrown into that structure violently, robbed of childhood, taken from the surface world, and forced to mature in a realm most people would never survive.

But the deeper power of her arc is forgiveness. Hannah Arendt argued that forgiveness is one of the only human actions capable of breaking the irreversibility of the past. Without it, every wound demands retaliation, every harm creates a counter-harm, and history becomes an endless chain of reaction. Rydia breaks that chain when she saves Cecil. She does not erase what happened to Mist. She does not pretend the pain vanished. She simply refuses to let revenge become the final author of her life.
