K.K. covers my favorite albums pt. 2
🔸 Ryo Fukui 🔸
.🦋.
Ryo Fukui was 22 years old when he moved to Tokyo and began to teach himself piano. Six years later, he released his debut album Scenery, which has since become the most widely played Japanese jazz album on YouTube with 14 million views.
Japanese jazz is one of my favorite sub genres within the cosmos of jazz, defined by a reverence for the art form that could only come from the country that has the highest proportion of jazz fans in the world. But it is not mere mimicry that bolsters this movement; Japanese jazz musicians were just as quick to evolve from Blue Note sounds as their American counterparts into the more esoteric realms of spiritual jazz and free jazz.
And this is where Ryo Fukui comes in, a perfect bridge between the Before and the After. You can hear echoes of Thelonious Monk and Ahmad Jamal in Fukui’s playing, but the form is bit looser, more playful with song structure, and a portent into where jazz would continue to shift through the remainder of the decade.
Scenery is a great place to start for anyone looking to dip their toes into the hugely rewarding world of Japanese jazz, and one of my more common soundtrack choices for when having coffee and drawing on a Saturday morning, and the rest of the day is open and planless, as full of possibilities as listening to a record like this.

new orleans // playlist
imagine yourself in a jazz bar at night, surrounded w chatter while you move your body to the music. warm amber hues, sunset reds and oranges, boozy feelings, a tipsy smile on your face, the smell of cigarettes caught in your hair and a sweet date by your side.
