This may be controversial but if Akechi did not exist and match as perfectly with Ren as he does, I'd definitely be a Ryuren shipper (I made up this Ren/Ryuji ship name. It might be right or I might be embarrassing myself).

I think the narrative does him kind of dirty by forgetting about him/treating him as comic relief most of the time but he was Ren's first friend after he was deemed a pariah through Shido's machinations. And, in the same sense, Ren was Ryuji's only friend after he was deemed a pariah through Kamoshida's machinations. Of course, this can definitely be said for all of the PTs, but I think there's something special to be said about being the first friend. Ryuji saved Ren's life, the others just made it better.

Akechi is king though, sorry. He's just so sad.
